Why are Chinese tourists so rude? A few insights

After almost every 'rude Chinese tourist' story, unfortunately, made SCMP.com's top-10 list, I decided to give the question some serious thought

BIO

Amy Li began her journalism career as a crime news reporter in Queens, New York, in 2004. She joined Reuters in Beijing in 2008 as a multimedia editor. Amy taught journalism at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in Chengdu before joining SCMP in Hong Kong in 2012. She is now an online news editor for SCMP.com. They are seen as pushy, loud, impolite, unruly, and they are everywhere.

And although destination countries welcome the tourism dollars the Chinese spend, they loathe the chaos and hassle some mainland tourists bring upon their cities and other tourists.

“Why can’t they just behave?” people wonder, some aloud.

I have been asking myself the same question in the past months after reporting on the uncivilised, sometimes galling behaviour of some compatriots.

It seems that every time a “rude Chinese tourist" story is published on SCMP.com, it goes straight into the site's top 10 most read articles - one such article even managed to crawl back to the top months after it was posted. So I decided to give the question some serious thought.

I read up on the topic, talked to tourism experts and travel agents and chatted with some of these tourists who are now at the centre of public anger.

It soon dawned on me that the real question to ask is: “Why are the Chinese rude?”

Yong Chen, tourism researcher and post-doctoral fellow at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, said most “bad” tourists don’t intend to be “bad” or “tourists”, they are just being themselves - they are being Chinese.

Education makes a difference

Not every Chinese tourist is a rude one, and educated people are usually better behaved than those who have had a lower standard of education, said Chen.

This could be why middle-aged or older tourists who have been deprived of or received little education during China's politically tumultuous times tend to act more unruly. Many of them do not speak English, and some are not fluent Putonghua speakers. Their knowledge of the destination country and its culture is often at best outdated or non-existent.

This might explain the behaviour of a "rogue” mainland couple who recently visited Hong Kong with a group. They called the police and demanded HK$3,000 yuan in compensation after being made to wait two hours for their coach. The travel agency later said the coach had broken down and accused them of “blackmailing”.

Disregard for customs and rules

Jenny Wang, a Beijing-based Maldives travel agent, said uneducated tourists usually turn a blind eye to local rules and customs.

A Chinese man who was recently vacationing at a Maldives resort flipped out after discovering that the restaurant where he wanted to eat was fully booked, Wang said. He yelled threats and slurs at Chinese staff until one member was in tears.

“You cannot reason with these kinds of people,” Wang said. “They think they can do anything with their money.”

But one thing many Chinese vacationers don’t want to do with their money is tip - a custom in some places which many have ignored, Wang said.

Though most travel agents in China would educate their clients about tipping in a foreign country ahead of their trip, most people ended up tipping very little or none.

Some are not used to the idea of tipping, and they fail to understand that staff working at the Maldives resorts, who usually earn a meagre salary, rely heavily on tips, Wang said.

This has created increasing tensions between the Chinese and their hosts. Staff would naturally prefer serving guests from countries with a tipping culture. Other staff have gone after Chinese clients and asked openly for tips, a rare thing for them to do in the past.

Lawless for a reason

Students at Ewha University in Seoul, known for its beautiful campus, have recently complained about an influx of Chinese tourists, said the school.

Apparently taking photos on campus was not enough. Some camera-toting Chinese would also stride into libraries and take photos without the permission of students, according to media reports.

“As much as we want to keep the campus open to the local community,” said a university representative, “we’d like to prioritise our students’ right to study in a quiet and safe environment.”

Ewha resolved the crisis by putting up multi-language signs advising tourists to stay clear of study areas.

It seems that thousands of years after Confucius admonished his students not to “impose on others what you yourself don’t desire",  the Chinese now act in quite the opposite way.

Such people, both overseas and at home, selfishly skirted rules for a reason, said Chen.

Living in China, where the rule-of-law doesn’t exist, means everyone has to look out for their own interest. It also means people have little or no respect for laws.

This is bound to happen when ordinary folk are forced to watch their laws being violated every day by their leaders, Chen said, citing the Chinese idiom, shang xing xia xiao, meaning “people in lower class follow what their leaders in the upper class do”.

How long do we have to put up with bad tourists?

China and its people are paying a price for the bad behaviour of their tourists.

A poll by the Public Opinion Programme of the University of Hong Kong recently found that the number of Hongkongers holding negative feelings towards Beijing and mainland Chinese is up by about 40 per cent since November.

Following that survey, SCMP.com conducted another online poll on Wednesday, headlined  “What makes some Hongkongers dislike mainland China and its people?”

As of noon, more than 50 per cent readers blamed the negative feelings on “ill-behaved tourists”.

“The Chinese government and travel agencies should take the initiative to educate our tourists,” Chen said, urging co-operation from both authorities and private sectors.

While many argue that historically American and Japanese tourists were also criticised for their bad behaviour when they became wealthy enough and traveled abroad for the first time, Chen said the Chinese should not use this as an excuse.

In fact, the Communist Party's Central Guidance Commission for Building Spiritual Civilisation and the China National Tourism Administration have recently issued a 128-character-long rhyme to remind tourists of behaving in a “civilised manner” on the road. The topic has also been a big hit on China's social media, where bloggers discuss and criticise the uncivlised behaviour of their compatriots.

But many are not optimistic that the situation will change any time soon.

“Chinese tourists have a long way to go before they will be respected by the world,” said Wang.

Next topic - "why do ethnic Chinese of different countries stereotype other ethnic Chinese, when the reality is that to non ethnic Chinese they are all the same"?
The author is being racist herself by tarring all 1.4 bn Chinese in China with the same brush. She should leave the Far East, see how it feels to experience that.

Chinese tourists are so rude. One time, when I was living in the UK i was out driving around, one of them got in front of my car and I was forced to run him over. Then when I got out to inspect the damage to my motor-vehicle, the guy was like, rolling around asking for me to get him some help. So rude!
Another time, I was vacationing in Monaco, and discovered it is a local tradition to prevent Chinese people from buying houses there by jacking up the prices every time a busload of tourists comes by, and one time, a guy bought a house there anyway. So rude!
I think you know the real story behind JFK. A Chinese guy was walking down the street in Texas, when John Wilkes Booth popped up behind Kennedy in the theatre gunning him down. Later, the Chinese guy literally **** himself. So rude!
I have another example. One time, I was getting on a plane, and this Chinese guy had some baggage. The baggage suddenly burst open and a massive pile of **** fell out onto the floor. People were like "My god, his bag was full of ****", and the guy just ran away. We were all chasing him, saying "You can't leave that **** there, it's unhygenic and against our local customs" but he kept running. So rude!
I was at the gym, and this Chinese dude was jacking all the machines to their full capacity. I am 100 kilos and like to think of myself as something special, but this guy was beating me at all the weights and stuff. So rude!
In Conclusion, Chinese people are awesome, I love it here

There is nothing new about this. Years ago, in the post WW2 era, when "rich Americans" were flooding into Europe as tourists, we used to talk about "Ugly Americans" . . . that is, ugly in behavior. And it is true - they WERE. But times change and eras pass.
The problem with "Ugly Chinese" is that they are new on the tourism scene. It is NOT a result of racial differences. Chinese are no more (and no less) rude or polite or intelligent or sincere or kind (or any other adjective you may try) than any other ethnic group. They are just inexperienced in how to be a GOOD tourist.
This, too, shall pass. And then, in 40 or 50 years the Chinese can complain about the horribly rude tourists of, well, whatever emerging nation exists at that time.
obed.tewes
How Ironic. It reminds me of Indians nowadays in the supermarkets and other such 'modern & developing' places. They are like we earned the right, now give it to us..!

What is HK$3000yuan please?
desertdavey
good question.
3000 HK$ is worth aprox $385.00
but 3000 Yuan is worth aprox $490.00
I have no idea what was meant by the phrase HK$yuan. Those are two entirely different currencies. I might as well say "Ten Pounds Sterling Pesos"!

Ive spent enough time in HK & China to have witnessed both sides of this argument. I'm not racist, not all Chinese people are rude or racist. Same as anywhere theres a percentage of people who are. The U.S. , Australia, China, Russia, everywhere has both these qualities amongst their popluace. It may seem like there are more racists & rude people in larger populated societies because there are more people. Its no more difficult as that. I have been shown kindness & hospitality by Chinese people who I didnt really know and found them quite affable. There are those who will put people down for various reasons but first there must be a separation between 'us' & 'them'. If the differentiation between 'perceived' races & then attributing negativity to the 'other' then thats judging based on race which is racism. Real adults are above that, a clean shirt or higher education doesnt make you a mature adult, if you need to be told what makes a mature adult then obviously you aren't. I'm Australian, 4th generation and I have known some very badly behaved Aussies. In all logic all populations have this quality. Sometimes a misunderstanding of culture & appropriateness is misconstrued to be described as rude. Essentially on a genetic level there is no such thing as race, there are no distinguishing genetic markers that determine 'race'. Ive had a couple of problems with people in China but I have also been offered seats on the train too with regularity when I was with my 1 year old son.

Hey hey hey, please make a distinction between uneducated mainland Chinese and other Chinese people. (I have met many polite mainlanders as well because they are educated.) There are many of us who are civilized, follow rules and are considerate of others. We feel ashamed to be lumped into the same category as these rude mainland Chinese. You know, these mainlanders also ruin nice Chinese neighborhoods too. They do the same rude things to other Chinese people and communities, so don't think they discriminate only against other races. The fact is, these rude mainlanders think just because they have money, they can do anything they want.

I know you might no post my comments, and is ok. You been another Chinese (or ABC) wont expect nothing more than hide the true and give your people more excuses to act like total JERKS (rude). So even if people don’t get to read this, at least you did. Hope one day you stop pretending been real patriotic Americans, and start acting like one. Care for you neighbors and stop playing manipulative games with people who they think you are a friend. Sick game the IM A GOOD PERSON/FRIEND of yours game. Not cool!

each other.
THEY are only rude to other people who are not Chinese. And this is the ugly truth no one wants to talk about or admit. I have been told this is what most Chinese think of other cultures. Hispanic woman are prostitutes, white people are selfish and not to be trust. Blacks are dirty and laud. And the list goes on and on. In general, they despite westerners. For the only reason that we do not play under the same games. If we dont like something, we complain and speak out. In the other hand, it is look down up on people who complain since it is consider rude and even an insult. Read-between-the-lines is the biggest characteristic of the chinese culture. They can handdle each other, but can't handlle us. That annoys them. Yes, education could help, but i would say is more about been expose to other cultures. In america, chinese stay with their own. Even if they are born in USA (they are call ABCs - America Born Chinese), they stay with their culture, they food, and MANNERS. They can work with americans and even hand with americans, but they do not married and make friends they way we do. Love for example, is not a trait that is admire, choosing the right partner with the righ career, values and family is more important that love. So many dont married because they are totally in love. ANd friends well they create categories of friends, the ones you hang for work and they wants you bring home to your family, etc. Everyone does that, but they do pretent to be real.

Oh my god. You have to be kidding me. Amy Li wrote this article to givre AN EXCUSE of how selfish and rude Chinise people are towards other people who are NOT CHINESE. This is the same story everywhere. WHen i started to read this article i though finally someone from their same people will tell the true. Instead yet another exuce.
I dated two chinese man. One from Hong Kong and One from Main land. I'm white american/european. Dating them doesnt make me an expert. What made me an expert was staying living within chinese culture for more than a dacade. I live in china town and dated these guys, and had chinese friends. And I will tell you why they are rude. The concesses is that they do not like other people. In fact, the cuture is all about them. A chinese roommate confesed to me that they are though, since they are children, not to care about other people other than your family and friends-- and if you are in USA or other countries that will apply to ANYONE ELSE who is not chinese.
While submerge in the chinese culture i learned that they are VERY polite, very loyal and nice to each other, friends and family. THey were exteamly nice to me and ONLY because i was dating one of them. So if not for me, it was out of respect to my boyfriend. My own boyfriends told me that the majority of chinese dont like americans, and in general they are recist. This is a topic of conversation that no other chinese will dare to admit. But they know they are recist.

I see nothing of the sort. Amy Li seems to be criticising these mainland '****s', not condoning their behaviour. And you are not a white American, your level of English betrayed you. Go Home, 50 cents!

I lived in one factory somewhere in Guangdong. I also feel sorry for them because the way I see the workers behave like animals. They squat in the street eating. When they eat and they do not like some of the food, they just spit anywhere. They eat the watermelon seed like a machine gun that they litter everywhere.
michmich
China is the only country in the world where you can walk down a city street unobtrusively minding your own business and 500 out of 1000 people you pass, will spit at you.
duncan.chan
maybe first generation acts like that, then 2nd gen will behave more accordingly. I just watched the Great Gatsby, and I don't find rich Americans in the 20s were any different in behavior with their money.
sienna.lai
EXACTLY!!! Americans .. in the 1920's .. LONG AGO outgrew that cultural mentality.

You can meet a lot of rude Chinese...but 2 hours later you are hungry to meet some more.

The West recoils when Li Hongzhang spat on the pique floor, a bad mannered commie no doubt.
These Chinese were starving people a short while ago: if you don't push, the food is gone. If you don't push to get on the bus, its gone and you will be late. They also come from a noisy place where nothing is heard if you don't yell. Many of the older generation are too busy to learn about Western manners.
Tolerance is what HK Chinese haven't learned after that many years of pseudo-western education. But tolerance is infinitely more important than eating noodles without slurping. Now that education comes to an end, maybe you should learn how to make the city competitive again from those raw, unsubjugated Chinese?
leon.davis.351
There's a positive quality to this so-called Chinese "rudeness". In fact, there are several. First, contrary to what most people believe, the Chinese people have a low tolerance for nonsensical or irrational displays of authority. They're a fractious lot. When they think they're getting the worst of the deal, they respond accordingly. Quite unlike people in the West who reflexively acquiesce to the wishes of political elites, no questions asked. Second, China is in a hurry. To my way of thinking, the Chinese are the hardest-working people on the planet. Totally goal-oriented. When they set out to do something, get the heck out of the way, because they'll build that dam, bridge, high-speed railroad or canal across Nicaragua and they won't down tools because somebody found an endangered daisy. They'll put the flower in a pot and keep digging. Third, China has been through some extremely perilous times within living memory. We're talking wars and famines that killed tens of millions. People will fight tooth and nail not to go back to that time. No, I look at the Chinese as not being "rude" but being "impatient". I like that about them.
sienna.lai
impatience causes the rudeness, and many other destructive things .. they cant get anything right the first time .. or even the second time .. nothing matters to them.
I have been told often how proud the Chinese are of their pragmatism and patience. But I find neither of these in their character currently, but quite the opposite. sorry.
roy.rosales.16
most RED chinese are rude because they have no freedom of expression, speech.they could not even communicate with others on what they think and opinion about their regimented communist goverment for fear of imprisonment.they have a miserable life.their standing order is to fallow, the orders of their superiors period..when lucky to go abroad, they unleash their hatred with their goverment by being rude to people belonging with a democratic countries.

This is not just a matter of "education" in the sense that most people would define the term education. This all boils down to the fact that inside of each and every human being is a thing called a conscience. When people treat their environment, including the other living things that also inhabit that environment, without respect (rudely) it's because their consciences are numb.
A person's conscience has to be educated and trained in order for it to work properly. I have lived in China since 2001 and I have never been able to understand how an individual can simply throw a piece of garbage onto the ground without the slightest thought about how that is going to affect the environment that he/she and many other people share.
There are certainly Chinese people who do not do such things and who care for the environment are are conscientious about keeping the environment clean and safe, but I must admit that, in general, most of the Chinese people I encounter on a daily basis, including many "educated" and successful Chinese, couldn't care any less for others or the environment surrounding them. In general, I would describe most people here as extremely lacking in self-awareness. They don't realize, nor do they care, how their behavior impacts other people, their own fellow citizens included.
This is not just a matter of Chinese tourists acting rudely. It's a matter of Chinese acting rudely in general, even at home.
jackinbox
There are signs everywhere in mainland warning people not to litter; wait for traffic signals; don't spit; etc. etc. which are generally ignored. It will take a few generations to get there.
China will have democracy when Chinese cross streets on "walk" signs. In the mean time, HK can learn some tolerance. Sending 500,000 people on to the streets to protest for democracy or some imagined infringement on freedom is rather foolish.

It is because Chinese are simply uncivilized.. Hong Kongers should teach them, but most HKers are racist people..
draconianfederation
I'm a HKer, and I demand you retract this statement. HKers are NOT racists.
Oh, some idiots in HK said we should teach these mainlanders manners, but what happens when we remind these ****s what they should be doing? These mainlanders verbally abuse us, telling us to mind our own freaking business.
When law enforing authorities admonishes them they act like they are something else and demand special treatment. Facing these sort of barbarians, why should HKers continue to go out of our way to 'educate' them?

I recently watched a documentary about the London Underground transport system. (It is their 150th anniversary). Showing footage of a train being boarded about 50-60 years ago, I was struck by how badly behaved the passengers were as they struggled to board before the passengers had got out. The had to be retrained by LT staff. They all seemed well dressed with the men in jackets and ties and presumably reasonably educated clerical staff. I can recall seeing signs on buses in Spain in the 70s forbidding spitting. Nowadays London passengers need no restraining and are very polite if a little glum and Spaniards would not dream of spitting on a bus.
I think poor behaviour by "uncooth Mainlanders will soon disappear. We just have to be tolerant and wait.
charlie212
what does this have to do with the article ? obviously a lot of people here would have done poorly on exams in school because most of the comments here are completely irrelevant. chinese tourists are rude, arrogant, loud, selfish, environment non-friendly and the list goes on...all of the above have been experiences first hand in person
Janet Kwan
Not ALL Chinese tourists are like that. Those of us who are not like that feel the same towards the rude ones, and we get the short end of the stick because we get lumped into the same category. My friends and I are very respectful and considerate when we travel, and that is because we are all college graduates. Usually, uneducated people anywhere tend to be rude and inconsiderate. It's just that China has undergone such an economic boom that many uneducated people struck it rich in a short period of time, and they travel or immigrate out of the country, so the uneducated Chinese is more visible to other countries.

This article is enjoying the longest running despite its caption that bears no relevancy to the content. In fact, there is neither answer to why nor any insight offered what the caption pronounced. SCMP editor falsified a news report by Amy Li with a popular slogan just to bait public’s attention. The unprofessional editor who wrote the caption should be reprimanded by SCMP. I hope Li agrees with me whose earlier journalism training abroad should concur.

There is no law against discrimination, hence minimum practice of political correctness in Hong Kong. People and media are at their raw being innate and uncontrollable desire to express. A cursory glance over most of the comments in SCMP they are inflammatory shouts. Perhaps, freedom of speech without a measure of civility makes life pretty ugly. Honesty to oneself in the public has limit and its value is destructive to a civic society. Listening to family and neighbor quarrels were a frequent experience when I grew up in Hong Kong in the 60s. They may have transformed into other means nowadays. Uncivil all the same.
little201296
Actually it's also blamed for the failure of the 6.4 incident .when people at that tine failed to get the desirable democracy, the communist party brain-washed them to focus on the economic development ,in order to distract their sights on a democratic country .and this made our compatriots today,so rude and uncivilized.

Oh, after so many years of being in HK (as a non-Chinese), I never knew HK people are not Chinese !!! Thanks for reminding everyone that HK media is not yet mature enough to discuss a problem with non-discriminatory terms and topics.

Just look into history for the past 100 year, try to understand what the Chinese had faced: war, invasion, the cultural revolution (education stop for at least 10 year), disgrace of their own culture irrationally... For many reasons, those rude chinese are disconnected with the good part of Chiese culture ( e.g. Confucius). It is a tragedy.

While I have noted elsewhere that bad manners are mostly due to the discrepancy in how people live in country and urban city. In an inclusive observation, I dare to say that Chinese culture itself as lived that practice of manner isn’t an unconditional given. Manners were profusely written by Confucius but exercising manners are highly selective. Unless when those who are interrelated, don’t expect manner will be used as a social lubricant. Chinese use manner mostly out of obligation and not from the joy of civility.
The lack of manner by Chinese thus can be perceived as rudeness of most and everywhere – in street, bus stop, legislative chamber ……. Being a tourist Chinese is particularly true to its culture.

For example, why do the US have the rudest immigration in the world?
HiggsSinglet
Hey, it has nothing to do with westernized. taiwan of today is different from taiwan of the 70s and 80s. taiwan is definately less confucius minded today than in the 70s and 80s.
HiggsSinglet
There are plenty of uneducated and poor people around the world, but they are not as rude as the mainland chinese. I think this is due to confucius teaching of control. If you look at taiwan and korea in the past, both heavily influenced by confucius teaching, they were both very rude in the 70s and 80s. As long as you are scholar or government official, you are at the top of the pyramid and as you know, with absolute power and no law, it breeds corruption. Therefore you do not care about others unless it benefits you. This is the way for thousands and thousands of years regardless who the ruler is at the time.

The current wave of mass-afluence driven Mainland Chinese tourism is not much different from the wave of mass-afluence driven German tourism in Europe in the 1970s.....lots of loud people who didn't realise that other countries have different customs. The German government did a pretty good job encouraging German tourists that they were all individual ambassadors of Germany and so they should respect local customs more. The tourism industry in other European countries did a pretty good job building centres that were 100% German - "Germany-on-Sea" - in Turkey, Spain etc. for those tourists who didn't want to embrace local culture.

It's force of habits. I've seen a post-graduate student huck & spit in public. She's in her 20s. She's like "What?" when people around her dropped their jaws in disgust. They do it back in their village / town / city / province, so they do it wherever they go (esp. when their economy is doing so well).
Just like white tourists drop their jaws to witness the crowded MongKok night scene w/o crowd control.
Tour guides need to do better job informing tourists what they can expect from locals & what they're expected during their visits.

Chinese tourists are not rude. They are just uninformed of the correct way to act in public. I hope they learn soon, too.

don't make me laugh. Bad manners have nothing to do with Marxism or Communists Chinese. On the other hand, I found HK people's manners bad and good were deeply affected by their former Colonial Master, the detestable British.
I was also shocked by the manners of the modern (all these bow down and sitting cross-legged) Taiwanese and Koreans who imitate the manner of the Japanese who ruled and brutalized them for decades. You think they have good manners?
I totally admire the mainland tourists' directness and not being nice. Their occasional foolishness and rudeness should be tolerated. After all, they are the ones who spend money and save you HK people from bad Economy.
Don't ever forget that we all came from the mainland to populate this little village which was colonized by the British for 99 years. It is the" rude" mainland "communist" Chinese that make the British to hand it over on their knees and saved you guys from living in a Crown Colony which no longer exists anywhere on the Globe by 1997.

The root cause may be inferiority complex turned "superiority" complex having made a little fortune which they had not had for years now thinkinh they can do anything. Few days ago, I was in Guangzhou waiting for the eelevator in a 3-star hotel. When the door opens, cigarette smaoke was spilling out. When I waived my hand in the air, the fller just throw his cigarette bud out into the hotel lobby.

"Waved" (not waived) your hand in the air was rude. Now you were the rude tourist in Guangzhou where smoking (and spitting) everywhere was the norm.
Just don't feel so superior when you visit.

I'll present an urban renewal analogy to explain the existing society in China. In urban renewal, 1st part is the demolition, then followed by part 2, the rebuilding. Present day Chinese society completed the 1st phase from 1949 and was 90% destroyed on purpose by the Cultural Revolution. Then, like how ineptly the CCP does everything, the Part 2 never happened, Mao died, and Deng XP came along, "Money is everything" and that was what rose to the top in today's society in China. The result are pushy people who don't give a darn about anyone not family, with no social conscience nor ethics, nor sense of morality, driven by greed. Rape the land, steal from the weak, anything to get enough money to buy citizenship in AU or Canada, then leave the poisoned land behind for the peasants

Marxism destroyed culture in China, and destroyed the bonds between people of society. Everything is politics and everything is materialism. Nothing was allowed to exist for people outside of the reach of the state. It became extreme in the 60's and 70's, but people are still living the consequences today.
For the least educated of society, those without any perspective, they are just living out as society has taught them.

Hail to the "rude Chinese" tourists. Tourists destinations especially such as Hong Kong deserve it entirely often because of their snobbiness and imperial attitude. As to tips, European tourists ( mainly Germans) don't tip. Nor do the Japanese simply because they claim that they don't accept tips. As to the Koreans, please look at the mirror yourself, they are one of the rudest people on earth.
rainer
Need to adjust your statement = Germans will tip for GOOD SERVICE ONLY since any regular service is already covered by the 10% service charge in the bill.
khoiyu
May be in HK but not in the USA where there are no 10% service charges in general.

Is it just tourists?

Super comments. The Communist Party ripped the soul out of the nation and left its moral cupboards bare.

Personally, I think the bad behaviours of Chinese tourists are evident when riding the MTR. Most Mainland MTR users lean on the hand-pole. Here's a personal experience: One time i was holding on to the pole and this Putonghua-speaking rider was leaning on the pole knowing that my hand was there (to secure my balance). His action is disgusting. I'd experienced this several times on different occasions. I think this is one of the main reasons why Mainland Chinese tourists have such a bad reputation.

I think people just like to belly ache. I bet most people dislike mainlanders just because newspapers like apple daily like to show some photos of kids going to the washroom in weird places. These are just a minority. Millions of tourists come and about 1% behave badly.
Americans go to Mexico and get drunk and get wild and crazzy.
Honestly I live in
HK and the tourists I see are all pretty good. No real complaints. The only bad comments I see are in scmp.
IRDHK
When I hear people in the office say they hate mainlanders I always ask why. They always quote some article. When I ask for a real life example I always get the same one - mainlanders always push in lines. Not a very good reason to hate a whole group of people.

Loudness is one thing, the Yanks are loud too- but on top of that with cutting in queues and the worst - sh*tting in public places when they aren't under the influence of alcohol or other substance(not that is an excuse) is just WOW.

not just sense of community, but basic human behaviour and courtesy are completely destroyed by the Communist government during the so-called Cultural Revolution launched by the Red Sun, chairman Mao---the biggest dictator in human history (at least in Chinese history even Qin Tze-huang compared with him looked trivial and tiny) who tortured and had millions of Chinese starved to death or killed ! After the Cultural Revolution, people on Mainland had no trust on each other and after the 'open door policy and economic reforms', money remains the only thing people value and care and besides money, there is nothing left.Traditional Chinese value and virtues are abandoned or ignored.Following the leaders of every level, commoners become greedy and selfish and only seeking personal interests with every means or methods---that explains why faked goods and crooks are everywhere on Mainland and non-corrupted cadres have become endangered species !
dunndavid
Communism has destroyed Chinese sense of community. If you want to know what Chinese used to be like you can get a glimpse in place like Taiwan, Hong Kong and the overseas Chinese community. As with Korea, it seems likely that China's fractured ethics will be rebuilt with the help of Christianity, which is growing rapidly. The big G (god) will replace the little G (government) that has failed.

to speak the truth, Amy has spent lots of efforts and sincerity to write the above article examining why rich Mainland tourists are not so welcomed overseas and even in our beloved Hong Kong except their money ! As all know,Mainland China does not practise 'rule of law' as in most civilized places or countries like Japan, the U.S.,the U.K.or Germany and others.Instead, she is ruled by law which is used to suppress her people and the majority of the leaders on Mainland do not obey the law themselves since their words are laws ! Every leading cadre is a king in his/her domain.Even a village head cadre acts like a chieftain, not to say someone like Bo Xilai who is under house arrest acted like the king of Chongking before he was arrested. Right ?

May I suggest to the leadership or academics of China it is time to consider starting a "禮運" Social Behaviour Awareness Exercise across China? This is getting very destructive to the image of Chinese people all over the world, not only from China.

What I'm missing is another reason why Chinese tourists are so rude and misbehaving. My wife is from the mainland and follows quite some news(blogs) from the mainland. It seems from those blogs that also the "normal" and "average" person on the mainland are disgusted by their fellow countrymen tourists, because most of them seem to be either government officials or closely related to the government and happen to think they can do just about anything and get away with anything. And come to think of it, it really is government officials and those closely related to them who can travel abroad more easily. Ofcourse not the really big guys from the central government, but those smaller guys trying to be more important than they really are... those less visible but more corrupt ones.
Hell of a theory don't you think? At the least will explain A LOT of the misbehavings.

Off topic, but this 'SCMP Offers an Insight' heading is really superfluous. I know this is the SCMP. When the SCMP publishes things, I assume they are offered by the SCMP, unless it is indicated the article is syndicated from AFP, The Guardian etc.

If the SCMP is going to indicate in every blog post, editorial, investigative piece or ordinary article that it is an opinion/insight/report/whatever offered by .... the SCMP, then we will be at it for a while.

It reminds of the equally enjoying TVB sponsored broadcasts which are announced like "PizzaBox Presents Masterchef, is brought to you by... PizzaBox."

Ah duh!, a younger person would say.

Ever hear about the english soccer fans? They pick fights everywhere.. Must be a wiki on that....

With a free media I think things might not turn so bad, as Chinese would know they were being criticised and received some level of civil education from TV and newspapers. Now, they are just living in their own way, still thinking they are welcomed everywhere because they can bring money to other countries to save their economic crisis. Behind the back, they are being laughed at. So I think government's strict control of the media contributes quite a lot to this.
gracekitying
How very sad! The worst part is they don't even think and know that they are rude or their behaviour appalling!. They put it down as 'discrimination'. Perhaps we never will understand because we didn't grow up in that 'culture and environment'! If the idea of 'being considerate' and 'money isn't everything' don't exist in their everyday life, we must not kid ourselves that they will conform to the standard of behaviour that is acceptable to most of us. Case closed!!!

Let me begin by saying I am aware there is plenty of well-behaved mainland Chinese as well, but unfortunately the average score is not great.

I don't think the issue is badly behaving mainland Chinese tourists. The issue is simply badly behaving mainland Chinese. From my experience of travelling in mainland China, their behaviour there is just as bad, if not worse.

When 'abroad,' they just behave like at home.

Quote: they are just being themselves - they are being Chinese. Unquote. THANK YOU SCMP that means I better dye my hair anything but black and throw away my HKSAR passport and bring out my Canadian while going through customs or being abroad and declare, if necessary that I am from Asian parentage but NOT Chinese unless I wish to get dissed or loathed. Suddenly I feel like a bottom feeder.

To some extend I agree that they are not being bad but being themselves. However, I have personally experienced in Phuket last week that Chinese are labelled as rude, impolite and lack of manners which I totally understand. First, when we were queuing up to pay our dinner bill, out of nowhere, a Shanghainese lady cut into the line and paid her bill in front of me. Then when we were having massage inside the quiet area, three Chinese women came in speaking and laughing loudly, even being warned by the staff that there were other customers and asked them to be quiet. It takes them about 20mins to settle down. Lastly when I was having a conversation with a sales in a shop, a Chinese man interrupted us and asked the price of a product. I can feel the people there sometimes don't want to deal with the Chinese people apart they can bring in money to their country. Because I'm Chinese, I'm always categorised as Chinese from mainland in Phuket which was not a good experience. It was different when I first visited Phuket 10 years ago. I hope the Chinese government can educate their people to respect others' culture or at least having the basic manners. Or else it will be really disgraceful to say I'm Chinese.

UN suggested we consume more insects to reduce world starvation. Isnt' that a mark of the barbarian? Got to keep an open mind. Defecating in the open is quite normal since not every country has the sanitation facilities. For those not accustomed to using them, it looks like a weird wash bowl...
I for one haven't seen a bidet and wouldn't refuse a manual if offered one....
caractacus
Rude because ignorant parents never taught them any manners, culturally arrogant and racist because their government needs to be able to tap a deep well of ignorance and prejudice. As jpinst correctly says, the Party needs to promote nationalism to provide itself with some level of legitimacy.
It's a mistake to pin it all on the CCP. The Ching Dynasty whipped up racist hatred of foreigners as well for the same reasons. It's nothing new.
The sad thing is the Chinese don't realise how much their self imposed "apartheid" and carrying around their racial and cultural baggage brings them into contempt in the eyes of the rest of the world.
antijunk@lycos.com
Hit the nail on the head here Caractus. I'd also say the cultural idea's of guanxi (i.e. your close freinds and family benefit from nepotism and the rest of society is undeserving of your compassion) is a very big factor too. So put another way they're selfish, uncaring, uncompassionate and basically downright rude.
req
Just lack of understanding of local customs. They're making themselves right at home.
jpinst
Much of this has to do with, believe it or not, Chinese Nationalism.
The Party and the media do little to educate the population on different cultures, customs and norms. They strive to promote Chinese greatness and do so by providing the population with a tunnel vision outlook of the world.
It is for the same reason, all the cooking demonstration shows only teach how to cook Chinese food. They are afraid that the poulation might start to admire or compare and contrast foreign cultures and countries with their own and this will reduce the impact of the nationalism that provides the Party with some level of legitimacy.
Chinese tourists, especially from the coutryside, are cut loose thinking there is only oine way to do something, the Chinese way and they have never been taught about Western or deveoped country's normal practtices. Although not normally a government responsibility, because the Party controls the media and the internet access, it has taken on this responsibility as the Chinese are unable to freely educate themselves.

What do you expect from a Total Morally Corrupt Government, Where the citizens have no earthly idea of proper behavior, and certainly no role models.
There are certainly exceptions to this, but they are few and far between.
Most of them have been lucky enough to have lived in civilized countries, and had examples and training in acceptable behavior.
It is only going to to get worse, hopefully HK will stay civilized.

shang xing xia xiao -- very appropriate way of summing it up. Of course everywhere in the world has rude and insensitive, or simply very ignorant, people who embarass their own compatriots. But China has many more and on top of that an unruly governance structure, with many more getting richer and richer and some of them more and more arrogant. Get used to it.
