Pictured: 'zombie' commuters ditch cars and walk amid massive Beijing traffic jam

Users on Sina Weibo liken the scene to a zombie apocalypse.

It’s like a scene out of American television show The Walking Dead, said a microblogger on Sina Weibo, after photos of apocalyptic, zombie-infested Beijing began spreading online on Monday morning.

Well, not really. The photos showed commuters walking through a rush-hour traffic jam. They weaved among cars and buses that were brought to a near standstill on an Beijing expressway on Monday morning.

With traffic flow moving in millimetres per minute, frustrated commuters figured it would be faster to just get out of their vehicles and walk.

Users on Sina Weibo likened the scene to "some sort of zombie apocalypse" in which undead creatures traverse highways lined with rows of abandoned vehicles. AMC's hit zombie series Walking Dead features many a similar scenario.

Beijing is notorious for traffic jams that can sometimes remain deadlocked for hours on end.

The city has held the record for one of the world’s worst traffic jams in history. The 12-day affair in August 2010 was not caused by bad weather or a natural disaster, just way too many vehicles.
