China denies allegation of Edward Snowden spying for Beijing

Beijing denies role over Edward Snowden and demands Washington explain its cybersnooping

China responded for the first time yesterday to the US cybersnooping programme exposed by whistle-blower Edward Snowden, denying an allegation he was spying for Beijing and demanding that Washington explain the operation to the international community.

"It is sheer nonsense," said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying when asked to comment on the allegation put forward by former US vice-president Dick Cheney and other US politicians.

Beijing has been tight-lipped about the saga since Snowden exposed details of the US surveillance programme last week. Hua said she had no information to offer on Snowden, who told the South China Morning Post that the US had been hacking networks in Hong Kong and the mainland since 2009.

"The US should pay attention to the concerns and demands of the international community and the public over the issue, and provide a necessary explanation to the international community," Hua said.

On Fox News Sunday, Cheney said Snowden was a traitor and he was worried that Snowden had additional information not yet released. China would "probably be willing to provide immunity for him or sanctuary for him in exchange for what he presumably knows or doesn't know", Cheney said.

An editorial in the mainland's Global Times yesterday said it would be unwise for Hong Kong to extradite Snowden, should the US make such a request, because it would tarnish Hong Kong's image as a city that upheld freedom.

"The consequences of extraditing Snowden back to the US would be more troublesome than the alternative, because the local reaction would bring more trouble to Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland," it said. "On the other hand, Beijing needs to demonstrate it can't just be pushed around according to Washington's wishes."

Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying said the Hong Kong government would do its best to uncover the truth about reports of hacking. "We are aware that the public are very concerned about internet safety issues," he said.

Observers said Beijing had trod carefully because it did not want to be seen as meddling in Hong Kong affairs or adversely affect Sino-US ties, especially after this month's summit between President Xi Jinping and US President Barack Obama. But Beijing was forced to respond because allegations had been made against China.

"Beijing is well aware that some US politicians want to divert attention at home by accusing Snowden of spying for China," said Pang Zhongying , an international relations professor at Renmin University.

Many people in the USA, 1000s of professors and academics and scientist have admitted that
9-11 was an INSIDE JOB.
9-11 was an INSIDE JOB.
9-11 was an INSIDE JOB.
**** faced Cheney, probably was a mastermind of 9-11. Some like Dr Alan Sabrosky say, it was a 100% MOSSAD operation. But Mossad cannot do it without CIA collaboration and protection. Thus, FBI itself was part of the operation and so was the NSA a part of the crime of 9-11.
All this must be analyzed very logically and carefully.
This means that USA ruling elite is composed of HARDENED and CALLOUS CRIMINALS.

Mr Snowdon is useless and probably a racist white because he did not reveal any details of the racist and criminal operation of 9-11 falseflag. 9-11 as everyone with science background and above average IQ knows, was a FALSE FLAG operation. It was immediately followed by ANTHRAX reinforcement and ANTHRAX DNA was from the USA lab in Aimes Iowa. I have a proof video by Dr Alan Sabrosky who admits that it was not any operation by the INNOCENT and Honorable Shaikh Osama Bin Laden. Here is youtube link

If this is true or not, I do not really care. But a question remains: Has China ever told the whole truth? They are very good in denying.....
Future will tell!

Snowden, thank you so much for your courageous efforts toward a better world. Humanity is on your side.
So far the information, that you have exposed publicly, of methods for cyber attacks, using the internet hacking through the servers of organizations or individual computers, is only one of the methods being employed to attack our social structures.
There are other methods of cyber-hacking information. One is the electro-magnetic cyber attack directly onto person’s brainwaves via satellite signals. There are many victims of such attacks in all corners of the world and involving people at all levels of the society.
Such inhumane acts using cyber technology to monitor civilians have been covered up by the governments whom controlled the access of this information. We the civilians (many of the victims) have been kept in the dark. If you have the evidence of this form attack please shed some light on this issue.
Thanks. Thanks.

Mr. Cheney,
If you do something to displease the US Government then you need to go somewhere relatively safe. We saw with the countless abductions to Guantanamo that no Western country is safe. The US simply doesn't respect the sovereignty of other nations. It fears the reaction of very few - maybe only Russia or China. It is only in those two countries that the US can not operate with impunity.
Of course to any rational human those two countries in themselves are not bastions of free speech and justice, but within China is one place where you can speak your mind without fear of persecution and enjoy a reasonable degree of freedom- Hong Kong. Really if you look at it this way 1. The need to find a country that won't bow to every request from the US and 2. A place where freedom of expression is permitted, then Hong Kong was the only real choice.
So take a hike ****. We may or may not like him being here, but there's not much you can do about it.

Why even bother addressing this war criminal!!! He will not change nor listen, just hope some day, someone or some country will send him and those in the us congress who opposes to shut down gitmo, lock them up, waterboard them (it is not torture) and then send them to the talibs as gifts!!! I am sure they will become talib's fav toys for awhile.

hard times !
an opinion poll commissioned by the SCMP found that even if the US govenment formally requests the extradiction of their so-called 'traitor' and 'Chinese spy', Mr.Edward Joseph Snowden, half of Hongkongers won't agree to hand him over.Anyway,he is now our benefactor, though only known each other for a week ! his act has made us realize that we have long been monitored and hacked by the NSA ever since 2009.

Dicky, get the basics right! There's more freedom and liberty in Hong Kong than the USA! In fact, we're proud of the fact that we can abuse our freedoms and liberties more than the USA!! We may be part of China, but we're virtually independent of China but for defence and foreign affairs! Didn't your underlings brief you in order to avoid betraying your ignorance. I'm afraid a hotline to Martin Lee doesn't help you understand Hong Kong one bit better.

If HK people want to keep Edward Snowden, then I think that they deserve to have him.

This is typically American - blame everyone other than themselves. As per usual America is treating the rest of the world with utter contempt.

What a typical Brit comment, generalizing about a nation of 300 million people. What a jenny.

Beijing must be pretty stupid to plant a spy there and let it go public when that spy is still in such a juior position. Wouldn't it be most benefiticial if the spies planted by Beijing climb up the ladder and and reach senior position so maybe some useful top secret info that might actually be useful to Beijing to provided to Beijing?
But then its Cheney, he and Bush only needs to entertain the 50% or more of Americans that are just out right "STUPID" to make a living. Maybe Rummy and Bushy can join in with Cheney and get their idiotic illusion run wild like fire again.
What's next Cheney you know even Bradley Manning is a Chinese spy... no?
johnyung
Does Cheney have any credibility after faking WMD claims in Iraq? He would love nothing more to start another war so his company can make more money. Suddenly Syria government is using chemical weapon after already confirm by others for months. The timing is suspicious, Cheney company probably sold the chemical weapon and lots of other weapon.
hongkiejj@malaysiaboleh
this is so pathetic...what's next ? All Snowden did was to expose the truth about NSA true nature. Frankly, this is not all about Snowden 100%, its bigger than dat. Dat is what Snowden is trying to tell us.
NSA is spying...hacking everybody in the world. Not only USA but the world. That is NSA.
The argument of security has its reason but the setback is double sword. Just how do we know how 100% if or if not NSA or govt are abusing the info ? There are just too many ??? on NSA.
Calling Snowden a traitor or a mole or spy or whatsoever is not gonna work. That is ludicrous. Absolutely.
