David Beckham, soccer ambassador in China, joins Sina Weibo
Former soccer player David Beckham has more than 400,000 followers only a day after making his official Sina Weibo debut.
“Hi I am David! Welcome to the OFFICIAL David Beckham Sina Page! Talk to you soon!” the Englishman wrote in his first post, which has been shared by more than 50,000 people.
“Thank you for coming to Sina! Welcome! You are so cool!” wrote one Weibo user in response.
Not everyone was so friendly though.
“Even this guy can be in headlines. [There are] too many fools in China,” wrote one user.
Some fans asked the former Manchester United player for his advice on how to save Chinese soccer, which has long suffered from a deteriorating reputation. The national team lost to Thailand on Saturday, on home turf, triggering allegations that they threw the game.
Beckham, who retired from soccer last month, arrived in Beijing on Monday as the ambassador to the Chinese Super League. On his second visit to the capital in three months, he donated signed jerseys and a sport car to a charity auction to raise money for China’s youth soccer. Later, he joined a live charity show on China Central Television (CCTV).
So far his Weibo posts consist of photos of Beijing taken from the car - and of himself in a car. "Stunning CCTV building," he posted on Tuesday. Earlier, it was: "Love Beijing, although not this traffic jam."
Despite his enthusiasm, Beckham pales in comparison to his wife's Weibo account. Victoria Beckham launched hers four months ago. She posts about her outings and fashion, and has more than 1.3 million followers.
