A Tibetan exile died after self-immolating at a Buddhist monument in Nepal on Tuesday morning, a local police official said.

“A Tibetan man in his forties set himself on fire at the Bouddhanath Stupa temple in the morning. His body was badly burned,” said Arjun Chand, a police official in Kathmandu.

“He was taken to the Teaching Hospital, where the doctors declared him dead,” Chand said.

Chand added that police are investigating the case, which is the third self-immolation by Tibetan exiles in Nepal’s capital.

A Tibetan man died after setting himself on fire in February this year, in the 100th self-immolation bid since a wave of similar demonstrations against Chinese rule took off in 2009.

Some 120 Tibetans have set themselves alight in protest against what they view as Chinese oppression since February 2009. At least 90 have died.
