Chinese Americans protest across US over Jimmy Kimmel's 'kill Chinese' skit

UPDATED : Monday, 11 November, 2013, 7:04pm

Thousands of protesters, mostly Chinese, rallied in 27 US cities over a perceived anti-Chinese skit that aired last month in a talk show hosted by comedian Jimmy Kimmel.

Chinese state media reported that protests swept across the United States on Saturday. One was staged at the Los Angeles headquarters of broadcaster ABC, which aired the programme. Participants argued that ABC and Kimmel had not taken full responsibility for what they perceived as an insult to their heritage.

The protesters called for Kimmel to be fired over a segment of his talk show called "Kids' Table" that aired on October 16. Both ABC and Kimmel have since apologised for the episode, in which a six-year-old boy said "kill everyone in China" when asked by Kimmel how the US should pay back the country's US$1.3 trillion debt to China. Kimmel responded: "That's an interesting idea."

However, Chinese-American groups were not impressed. While some accepted the apologies that were offered after the subsequent uproar, others viewed them as insincere and demanded more. Charles Lu, chairman of the Roundtable of Chinese American Organisations, told the Los Angeles Times last week that they wanted a formal apology from ABC not just to the groups protesting, but to all Chinese people around the world.

Online pictures of Saturday's protests showed demonstrators, including college students, parents and children, dressed in red T-shirts with logos reading "Teach kids to love, not to kill", and chanting slogans such as "Kimmel must go" and "Shame on you, ABC".

Protest organisers distributed free posters to demonstrators. One featured Kimmel with a swastika just above his head.

"The protest plays an important role in improving our prestige and national cohesiveness," a Chinese demonstrator in New Jersey said on internet chat room Mitbbs. "The parade is intended to raise the social status of Chinese Americans in the US."

The segment also prompted the submission of a petition to the White House to investigate the Jimmy Kimmel Live! show on the grounds of offensive content. The petition garnered more than 100,000 signatures.

Xinhua said 800 people attended a rally in Washington, where a letter of protest to ABC was read out. The letter urged the broadcaster to fire Kimmel and hold a press conference to officially apologise to Chinese communities. It called on ABC to make sure that such "rhetoric of racial discrimination" was prevented by stepping up regulation of its televised content.

No one from ABC attended the event in Washington to accept the protest letter, reports said. Police were mobilised to maintain order, but the day ended without incident.

The demonstrations are believed to have been the largest held by the Chinese community in the US since those just before the Beijing Olympics in 2008 in response to CNN commentator Jack Cafferty labelling Chinese leaders "goons" and "thugs".

If the hysterical reactions were based on something Kimmel said they might have half a point. If critics bothered to watch the video they would see it was the six year old kid who came up with the "kill the Chinese" idea not Kimmel. Calm down everyone. This Chinese overreaction displays a grossly inflated sense of insecurity or worse. A perceived slight to a self important national ego from a little kid. For God's sake get a grip....

You're assuming anger against broadcasting pro-genocide statements is not the appropriate response. Nobody I know is angry at the child. They are expressing that they do not prefer ABC air hate statements toward an ethnic group.
gravity.rk
Actually what bothers me is that the mentality of killing those who lent you something, 1 trillion in this case. IF they can kill all the people in China, which is the creditor, simply because they cannot pay it. They can also do it to any other creditor, german, british, whatever country on the globe. This is very scary & freaky solution. And the lesson here is? We know it deep inside our heart.

Such an irrational, over-reaction to a silly, ill considered piece of satire suggests that CCP megaphone propaganda lies somewhere behind it. One wonders just how deeply Xinhua is involved, including the public demonstration in Washington attended by 800, no doubt composed mostly of AMERICAN Chinese citizens?
andrew.lee.ca
I find your acting like they are not the victims, distasteful.
notjoke
always there are stupid people with illusion like you who act they know every secret behind. simple fact: chinese and chinese gov. don't care about it, because it is not easy to kill everyone in china, but it is very easy to provoke racism which is already deep rooted in american society against chinese americans.

recall Don Imus? he called black people the "n" word and black women as "water buffalo", "hos" on his morning show. he was fired within 2 weeks AFTER he went on an apology tour in the black community. recall Michael Savage? he call mexicans "wetbacks" and arabs "camel heads". he was fired within 1 week although he never apologized. but Kimmel won't get fired. chinese american have little political power compared to african american, mexican american...
caractacus
Chinese Americans have equal political power and equal legal rights with everyone else. They have a VOTE, freedom of speech and equality before the law, which no-one in China does.
andrew.lee.ca
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the vote is not conditional on accepting hate statements.
globenet
What if the term that was used were ''Jews" or "Irish" or "Negros" or Philippinos some "WASP" etc....?
What sort of reaction do u think there will be?!
All Americans are of different race and ethnic groups....The only real Americans are the First Nations, the rest of you Americans out there are immigrants like al the Chinese, Japanese, Mexicans, Cubans, Haitians, JEWS, Germans, etcc......
Racism in America is out of countrol.....
Think about it when making stupid comments.......
chuchu59
Er,
Its not too appropriate for them to say 'Shame on you ABC. The abbreviation is commonly used for American-Born-Chinese'. I agree though that its been badly handled by this organisation. Kimmel should have stopped this dead in its track by stating this was not an appropriate thing to say. The children are innocent but the grown-ups should know better.
notjoke
To those selfish ones who think it is a joke, let me make a joke about your family to see if you think it funny: s c rew all the pussies in your family and sodomite all the as s holes of male members in you family. It's a joke! You call it a joke because you are not in other ones' shoes.
andreaswagner
So are these protesters:
A) Chinese?
B) American?
C) 'It's complicated'?
andrew.lee.ca
I don't like people ridiculing others based on their cultural background.
jayb
andreaswagner. they are all americans inculcated in chinese culture/civilization. no different from irish american, italian american, mexican american, african american. all are americans but with unique cultural heritage and sensibility. imagine Kimmel said "kill all mexicans", first of all, Kimmel won't say that, living in LA and saying "kill all mexicans" won't be smart. second, mexican american have so much more political power in LA, Sacto and DC than the chinese american.
notjoke
Chinese americans who had been treated as chinese instead of americans by racists in U.S.

Why do some signs written in Chinese say "I love China"?
gravity.rk
u mean, those with the alphabets?
jiawang@adb.org
No. Signs written in Chinese characters saying "wo ai zhong guo."
Of course, Americans didn't understand the Chinese but the US press could have made a big thing about this and caused problems for China.
notjoke
Either you don't understand chinese language or you are just lying. There's no sign saying "I love China".

Apologise once then ten apologies are demanded.
Apologise ten times then a hundred apologies are demanded.
Apologise a hundred times and a thousand apologies are demanded.
Apologies a thousand times............
It's a national characteristic to play the victim, apologies are rarely accepted because 'victimhood' is lost. It's a pity; individually Chinese are engaging and genuine people but mob culture rules.
andrew.lee.ca
Correct me if I'm wrong, but there's no proof that they need accept an apology that 1) does not directly address the Chinese community, and 2) does not admit wrong doing in broadcasting pro-genocide statements towards that group.

China's media recently published an article stating: “Because the Midwest states of the U.S. are sp****ly populated, in order to increase the lethality, [our] nuclear attacks should mainly target the key cities on the West Coast of the United States, such as Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego. The 12 JL-2 nuclear warheads carried by one single Type 094 SSBN can kill and wound 5 million to 12 million Americans."
****downtrend.com/robertgehl/china-releases-graphic-showing-nuclear-attack-wiping-out-western-us/
There were no American demonstrations against this official statement made by the Chinese media.
A child on a US TV comedy show made a joke that "the Chinese should be killed" as an alternative to paying back the money the US owes China.
Chinese held many demonstrations in the US calling for the firing of the TV host and a public apology to Chinese around the world.
As a result, some Americans who first thought the "joke" was in poor taste are now saying it's a good idea.
Chinese should take a lesson from their failed worldwide Olympic torch relay - they are not liked in many countries.
gravity.rk
lol, please use an accredited source. Dont humiliate the US, which emphasizes citation & proofs.

Really? Who is the only one in this world actually really did use the nuclear weapon on mankind? The answer is: the United states of America in World War 2 on Japan, twice! Who is the one has the most amount of nuclear weapon in the world? U.S.!
jiawang@adb.org
So what's your point? Stay on topic. Don't get confused.
downtrend.com/robertgehl/china-releases-graphic-showing-nuclear-attack-wiping-out-western-us/
Reported last week China would target major cities on US West Coast.
jayb
which chinese media writing about nuking midwest? like to verify your source before i buy your argument.
speaking as an american, we are certainly not more popular than the chinese around the world (one can say we are less popular than the chinese especially in middle east, asia and africa). as such, i am not sure it is important to be popular worldwide. at the end of the day, it's all about $$$$.
wailunscmp
Most of the protestors are Chinese born in China (not so much American-born Chinese) so we can understand why they are agrieved. They are recent immigrants or students or Chinese citizens working in the US. They wont' understand satire because it doesn't exist in the PRC and certainly disallowed. Furthermore, the world in which they live in is a Chinese centric world even though they may be in a western country.
Kimmel's skit is terribly bad taste and very insulting but doesn't warrant such an uproar. It's just a awfully bad joke at the expense of other people. Chinese people need to mature up to understand what is a joke, even if it's a bad one. Han chauvinism or Chinese ultra-nationalism will only put off other non-Chinese. Remember, there are 6 billion non-Chinese in this world who won't look favourably to displays of ultra-nationalism and chauvinism. If China is to win the world over with soft power, it needs to wise up.
We should get angry over injustice, deceit, corruption, inequity, unemployment, high cost of living and poverty but not over a bad joke or satire.
BTW, I don't recall the Chinese government apologising to the American people after an important Chinese general threatened to nuke L.A. and the west coast a few years ago?
andrew.lee.ca
You appear to think airing and supporting pro-genocide statements is ever acceptable.
notjoke
you are wrong, most protestors are americans with chinese heritage, and interestingly, white people said asians have the highest IQ, which means asians are most wise people in the world. if you don't know anything, please don't act like you are the expert of it.
jayb
"most of the protestors are chinese born in china"? what is your source? i checked AP, NYT and could not fact check your claim.
gravity.rk
yeap, i heard that many of them are students from mainland.
XYZ
The original comment was made by a six-year-old child. Broadcasting it may have been insensitive and in bad taste. Both Kimmel and ABC have apologized. The protesters say they want Kimmel fired and a further apology issued to all Chinese everywhere in the world. In America, the right to peaceful protest is protected. Economic boycotts are a legitimate means to bring political pressure to bear on companies. If the protesters are successful, God bless them.
.
Of course, this terrible tragedy of thousands of lives ruined could easily have been avoided if the U.S. had simply granted Chinese a form of visa that prevented them from ever applying for American citizenship or right-of-abode in the first place, the way forward-looking Hong Kong does with Filipina domestic helpers.

Who is U.S.? What is U.S.? U.S. is made of european immigrants, african immigrants, spanish latino immigrants, jewish arabian immigrants, asian immigrants including chinese immigrants, etc. It's an immigrant country. What are you talking about? You sound like U.S. has to belong to Euro white people who acturally robbed the land from the native amercians who you call indians.
lily.guo.961
Chinese Americans are still amercans. Especially if they were born in America. It is insulting for others to say otherwise. One thing to some of you people, WE ARE NOT CLOWNS OF ANY SORT
oasis
For what its worth, none of my ABC friends have even mentioned this. None of us identify ourselves with the 'Chinese' of China. I can see the humor in the joke, its a little close to 'home', but that's what comedians do. You don't have mass protests when they make fun of 'white trash'...?
notjoke
if the one you make fun of is not offended, it is a joke, if the one you make fun of is p-i-s-s-e-d, it is not a joke, it all depends on what the joke is about and who you make fun of to. you can not call a black n-ig-ger, but you will be fine if you say the same word to a tan-skinned white.

ejmciii
It was in bad taste. It is comedy, albeit bad comedy. Get over it and grow up. You all seem fixated on apologies and yet you have no problem offending others and telling them to get over it.
andrew.lee.ca
Do you not believe in a zero-tolerance policy against both hate statements and airing pro-genocide remarks on television?
johnyuan
The caption is misleading. Deliberately perhaps.
.
The Eurocentric American culture still prevails. American Chinese even of those where the third or more generations in the country is subconsciously perceived as Chinese not American. Giving that American Chinese try their best to integrate more into the mainstream culture, the public protests at the ABC show may not be to them to feel offensive. The show’s target was clearly aiming China’s Chinese. For American Chinese to join in the protest is not to their best interest it only reinforces the view that they are still Chinese in America if they do so.
.
Hence those who protested are mainly Chinese students studying in the US and the newly immigrants perhaps. Judging from the appearances of the people in the pictures I think I am right. The news coverage is inaccurate and political.
jayb
mega ditto. although it is very sad that many 2nd gen americans really think they are american. so much so that they don't know chinese language, culture and civilization. i have ABC don't speak, write chinese. ABC telling me chinese is not an "innovative people". ABC telling me chinese are good at math but not in music.... manifestation of ignorance to the 2000+ yrs of chinese civilization. case in point, US Amb to China, Gary Lock, chinese american but the guy doesn't speak/write chinese.

HK is just a small Chinese city with nothing special in this century seriously. Oh wait, on behalf of her majesty and the british empire, I demand apologies for the british pilot stabbed in HK. And what's going on with the Lamma Island ferry tragedy??? how about the HK Chinese died in the ferry tragedy in Thailand, did u ask the kingdom of Thailand for apology to the little crying city of HK???

yes, chinese americans are americans instead of chinese, but in the eyes of Nazi racists of this country, they are chinese. German jews were germen, but see how Nazi treated them. Are you a Jew? You look Jew.

Well because they are chinese-american. If someone said in USA killed all the Israelite I am quite sure the american jew establishment would be rocking the boat and quite harder than chinese-american are doing now. At the end of the day such comments are a crime called a hate crime and they are banned in most of the civilized countries. Don't you think its just common sense?
