Dump truck driver arrested in Shenzhen for death of urban management officer
Incident is the latest in spate of similar fatal accidents involving heavy trucks and blamed on city's construction boom
A 30-year-old dump truck driver has been arrested in Shenzhen for running over and killing an urban management officer while trying to flee a crackdown on illegal construction waste disposal.
The accident happened on Wednesday after about 20 officers were sent to check on trucks dumping building rubble into the sea in Shajing sub-district, near Shenzhen airport, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported.
At about 7 pm, the officers found nine dump trucks parking along Jincheng Road and waiting to dump the waste. Eight of the nine truck drivers were unlicensed to drive heavy vehicles in Shenzhen.
As officers tried to seize the vehicles, one of the truck drivers got on his vehicle and tried to escape. His truck knocked down an officer and then overturned and rolled over another officer. The first officer suffered grazes while the second officer, aged 32, was severely injured and died in hospital on Thursday night.
The driver stopped his truck and got out after hitting the officers.
Public anger has grown in Shenzhen over a growing number of fatal accidents involving dump trucks that have accompanied the recent property development boom. Residents have complained of dump trucks using lanes reserved for cars, carring excessive loads, speeding and illegally change lanes.
A source close to the truck owners said most vehicles were registered outside Shenzhen and often ignored local regulations. “Some truck owners often demand that drivers overload, saying they’ll compensate drivers if they’re fined,” he said.
On February 27, a woman and her two-year-old daughter were crushed to death by a dump truck in Bao’an district.
In November, a male pedestrian– also in Bao’an – died when he was run over by a dump truck as he was picking up money from the road.
In September, one pupil died and 16 others were injured when a dump truck struck their bus in Pingshan New Zone.
In October 2012, four people, aged from five to 50, were killed in Shenzhen in a series of local dump truck accidents within a week.
