New | Influential media figure 'being investigated for graft'

A senior executive of a major media group from Hubei province is being investigated for corruption, several mainland news outlets reported on Tuesday.

Zhang Qinyun, the manager of Hubei Daily Media Group and former chief editor of the influential local newspaper Chutian Metropolis Daily, was taken away by provincial disciplinary officials on Monday afternoon, Chinanews.com and China.com.cn reported.

Sources said the investigation was about money, the report read.

Both media outlets cited Chengdu.cn, run by the media office of Chengdu municipal government, but the original report could no longer be found on the website.

Zhang was became manager of the media group in November 2011. He chaired Chutian Metropolis Daily, owned by the media group, for four years from 2007 to 2011.

The 44-year-old started his media career as a culture reporter at Chutian Weekend. In 1997, Zhang switched careers to become Chutian Metropolis Daily’s head of advertising.

Hubei Daily Media Group declined to comment on Tuesday. The group, with more than two dozen newspapers and magazines, is administrated by the provincial propaganda department.
