Online anger at witnesses who did nothing to stop McDonald's killing in Shandong; cult suspects held

Six members of a religious cult have been arrested for killing a woman at a McDonald's in Shandong province in a case that has prompted national outrage over the failure of onlookers and restaurant staff to intervene.

The suspects, all members of the Quannengshen (Almighty God) cult, were collecting telephone numbers to recruit members in the Zhaoyuan restaurant at about 9pm on Wednesday. They were said to have become agitated when the victim, surnamed Wu, rejected them.

Online videos and photographs showed the suspects beating Wu with chairs, then with a metal mop. The beating continued even after the mop broke, with attackers kicking Wu's head.

Onlookers and restaurant workers who failed to intervene were castigated for their "cold-heartedness" by internet users and relatives of the victim.

State-run CCTV quoted a suspect as saying the beating started when his daughter accused Wu of being an "evil spirit". Wu resisted, but that only led to a more ferocious beating that continued even after police arrived.

A relative of the dead woman said the family was distraught that no one tried to protect Wu, the mother of a five-year-old boy. She was waiting to meet her husband after work.

"Their son doesn't know what has happened to his mum, and we don't know how long we can keep him from knowing the truth," he said.

"We can understand that people get scared and it all happened so suddenly, but we cannot help wondering what would have happened if other witnesses were a bit braver. After all, the attackers weren't holding guns or knives."

A witness, though, said that he, another onlooker and a restaurant worker had asked the attackers to stop, but were warned by a female suspect that "whoever intervened would be beaten to death".

Five suspects were detained for suspected intentional homicide. A sixth will be dealt with separately because he is under the age of criminal responsibility.

Religion is the mother of all evil. It is the source of most wars. Look at the crusades, Northern Ireland and The Middle East just to name a few
I love living in China for many reasons, but one of them is that China is an officially atheist country. I am an atheist for many reasons, mainly because I have never, in my 49 years, ever seen any evidence of God, or any reason for religions to exist. Whilst the Americans were having their much famed Civil War, there was a 'Christian' religious war raging in China that was only dwarfed by the Muslim conquest of the Indian Subcontinent. The Taiping Rebellion (1850-1864) was led by the "younger brother of Jesus Christ" Hong Xiuquan, which resulted in the deaths of between 20,000,000 and 100,000,000 people. The Heavenly Kingdom was nothing more than a proto-House-Church gone unchecked. I made the mistake of watching the video above late last night. It left me so filled with anger and hatred for the religious crazies in this world who carry out acts of violence because 'God told them to do it'; but more so for the bystanders who did nothing. I know that it is difficult to assess a situation without actually being there, but I hope that I would have risen to the challenge and knocked that modern day Hong Xuiquan to the ground and beat him near to death. The Death Penalty is simply far too easy for this God Botherer and his evil disciples.
I'm starting to get the feeling that the mainland Chinese are starting to become a sick and insane group of people.
There are a lot more cults of this sort in the US than in China, still remember the famouse movie star Sharon Tate being killed by the cult led by Manson just 2 weeks before she due to give birth to her first child some 40 years ago? and there are a lot more cases like this in the US. You are pardoned because you seem to be very young and know little about the Americans.
I disagree "Religion is the mother of all evil" and "it is a source of most wars". I'll use those three wars you mentioned. The number of deaths (higher estimates):
Crusades: ~1,000,000
N. Ireland: ~3,500 (for the 3-decade long conflict) - some of which could be racially motivated.
Middle East - which one are you referring to? Gulf War was not a religious war. Soviet Cold War in Afghanistan was not primarily a religious war. Afghanistan is mostly inhabited by Muslims, so their response to the Soviets does not automatically mean it started as a Religious war. US invasion of Iraq for WMD? Not religious either. More like oil or something else. So I don't know what you're referring to.
Let's take a look at non-religious war casualties (higher estimate):
WWII ~85,000,000
WWI ~65,000,000
Qing dynasty conquest of Ming Dynasty ~25,000,000
Hundred Years' War ~3,300,000
Russian Civil War ~ 9,000,000
Mongol Conquest ~ 30,000,000
Korean War ~ 4,500,000
.... just to name a few out of a fairly big list.
In short, yes, I agree there were wars, deaths, and evil committed in the name of religion (usually extremists and people interpreting religion doctrine for their own hypocritical and selfish goals). But the number of such wars, the tolls incurred and violence is a fraction of non-religious wars.
An example when the state purges religion completely: North Korea. Even haircuts have to be state-approved.
I rest my case.
Peace be with you.

In China, 99.99% are lookers and bystanders...0.01% "might" help
In HK, 99% are lookers and bystanders...1% would actually help (excluding expats)
The attackers deserve the worst punishment and the onlookers should be punished and shamed. Unfortunately, this is how China has become today. So sad.
WW2 6 million Jews just because they were Jews , Iraq one group of Islam against the other, Middle East the continuous tension between Israel and the rest etc.

The SCMP should have virtual popcorn and coke dispensers online so we can all kick back and enjoy the snuff video above. Classy stuff. Just when you thought media in this part of the world couldn't sink any lower. Apple Daily, eat your heart out.
