Online anger at witnesses who did nothing to stop McDonald's killing in Shandong; cult suspects held

Six members of a religious cult have been arrested for killing a woman at a McDonald's in Shandong province in a case that has prompted national outrage over the failure of onlookers and restaurant staff to intervene.

The suspects, all members of the Quannengshen (Almighty God) cult, were collecting telephone numbers to recruit members in the Zhaoyuan restaurant at about 9pm on Wednesday. They were said to have become agitated when the victim, surnamed Wu, rejected them.

Online videos and photographs showed the suspects beating Wu with chairs, then with a metal mop. The beating continued even after the mop broke, with attackers kicking Wu's head.

Onlookers and restaurant workers who failed to intervene were castigated for their "cold-heartedness" by internet users and relatives of the victim.

State-run CCTV quoted a suspect as saying the beating started when his daughter accused Wu of being an "evil spirit". Wu resisted, but that only led to a more ferocious beating that continued even after police arrived.

A relative of the dead woman said the family was distraught that no one tried to protect Wu, the mother of a five-year-old boy. She was waiting to meet her husband after work.

"Their son doesn't know what has happened to his mum, and we don't know how long we can keep him from knowing the truth," he said.

"We can understand that people get scared and it all happened so suddenly, but we cannot help wondering what would have happened if other witnesses were a bit braver. After all, the attackers weren't holding guns or knives."

A witness, though, said that he, another onlooker and a restaurant worker had asked the attackers to stop, but were warned by a female suspect that "whoever intervened would be beaten to death".

Five suspects were detained for suspected intentional homicide. A sixth will be dealt with separately because he is under the age of criminal responsibility.

Those blaming religion for this brutal and horrible crime have very short memories. How many people needlessly died during the godless regime of Mao? The greatest atrocities during the past century have come from the irreligious (Hitler, Stalin, Mao, N Korea...), not the religious. Further, it is exactly because China is an atheist country that many of its citizens lack basic moral principles and feelings of sympathy towards others, which results in them standing by with camera in hand as a woman is beaten to death.

The CCP doesn't want the people of China to have the right to bear arms, not because banning arms makes China safer (it doesn't), but, rather, banning arms makes it easier for the CCP to control the people and imprison, torture, and murder them without fear of reprisal.
Every year in the US, thousands of crimes are prevented by armed citizens. An armed society is a polite society.
中國共產黨不想讓中國人民有權攜帶武器,並不是因為禁止武器使中國更安全 (不是),但是,相反,禁止武器更容易為中國共產黨和來控制人民和監禁、 酷刑、 謀殺他們不用擔心報復。
The terrible thing about Chinese society is this total acceptance from everyone that violence is acceptable.
I love living in China for many reasons, but one of them is that China is an officially atheist country. I am an atheist for many reasons, mainly because I have never, in my 49 years, ever seen any evidence of God, or any reason for religions to exist. Whilst the Americans were having their much famed Civil War, there was a 'Christian' religious war raging in China that was only dwarfed by the Muslim conquest of the Indian Subcontinent. The Taiping Rebellion (1850-1864) was led by the "younger brother of Jesus Christ" Hong Xiuquan, which resulted in the deaths of between 20,000,000 and 100,000,000 people. The Heavenly Kingdom was nothing more than a proto-House-Church gone unchecked. I made the mistake of watching the video above late last night. It left me so filled with anger and hatred for the religious crazies in this world who carry out acts of violence because 'God told them to do it'; but more so for the bystanders who did nothing. I know that it is difficult to assess a situation without actually being there, but I hope that I would have risen to the challenge and knocked that modern day Hong Xuiquan to the ground and beat him near to death. The Death Penalty is simply far too easy for this God Botherer and his evil disciples.
Religion is for the weak. People want to believe what sounds agreeable to them. And Religion answers even when they don't know...

The SCMP should have virtual popcorn and coke dispensers online so we can all kick back and enjoy the snuff video above. Classy stuff. Just when you thought media in this part of the world couldn't sink any lower. Apple Daily, eat your heart out.
Beacause they have no gun in hands and not be martial arts experts. Although only two adult male mobs I think. And why not that video shooting man run away?A cruel coward.
Thats why falun gong worshippers need to be caged and put down.
I'm starting to get the feeling that the mainland Chinese are starting to become a sick and insane group of people.
There are a lot more cults of this sort in the US than in China, still remember the famouse movie star Sharon Tate being killed by the cult led by Manson just 2 weeks before she due to give birth to her first child some 40 years ago? and there are a lot more cases like this in the US. You are pardoned because you seem to be very young and know little about the Americans.
