Peng Liyuan is a popular Chinese folk music and opera singer and the wife of Chinese president, Xi Jinping. A native of Yuncheng County, Shandong, Peng was a finalist at the First National TV Chinese Vocal Contest and is best known for works including People from Our Village and On the Plains of Hope.
Peng makes splash in fashion-savvy Seoul
What to wear when visiting the country widely seen as Asia's fashion trendsetter?
For China's first lady, the answer was a number of outfits. Instead of a modified-cheongsam look, Peng Liyuan chose for her first outfit a cropped beige jacket with dolman sleeves on top of a aquamarine top, with a black pencil skirt, black pumps, and black clutch.
"Quite nice!" said William Tang, one of Hong Kong's best known fashion designers. "However, the jacket is too overwhelming. If the jacket and skirt were dark jade green, that would be perfect."
Several online commentators were critical of the jacket, but others said the tailoring embraced traditional Korean elements.
For her first meeting with South Korean President Park Geun-hye, Peng changed into an all-white coat on top of a white dress with a green brooch and white clutch. Park wore a tangerine-coloured coat with khaki trousers.
When Peng left Beijing for Seoul, she was wearing a white blazer with a stand collar and a black and white checkered skirt. Peng's fashion choices as well as her involvement with charities have been described as part of China's soft-power diplomacy. But the Blue House, South Korea's presidential palace, was reportedly sweating over Peng's high-fashion style as they sought to select outfits for South Korea's first woman president.
"First lady Peng tends to wear fancy clothes so they might not match with President Park's clothing," an unnamed source from the Blue House told the Korean Economic Daily.
