Mainlanders spend most of their tourist dollars on shopping, poll finds

A mainland tourist spends about 20,000 yuan (HK$25,000) on each trip abroad, most of it on shopping, a survey has found.
Japanese and South Korean cities, including Sapporo and Seoul, are the most visited of 50 top cities, according to the survey by market research company Ipsos.
"China has become the biggest consumer in outbound tourism, and it has the biggest inbound tourism market," Shao Qiwei , director of the National Tourism Administration, told the Beijing Fragrant Hills Tourism Summit, where the findings were presented yesterday. The forum is held by the World Tourism Cities Federation, an organisation launched in China in 2012 to build cooperation in the industry.

Mainlanders spent more than US$128 billion while taking more than 98 million cross-border trips last year, according to the China Tourism Academy. The number of trips was 18 per cent higher than the previous year, while spending was up 26 per cent.
Shao said mainlanders were expected to take more than 500 million overseas trips in the coming five years.
