Jiangsu province witnessed its biggest-ever drug bust recently, seizing more than 2,000kg of drugs and arresting 16 people, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

Public security officers in Jiangsu, as well as in Guangdong and Shandong provinces, raided suspected drug hotspots on the morning of September 11.

They confiscated 1,010kg of cathinone, a stimulant that belongs to the same family as speed and Ecstasy; 1,320kg of ephedrine, also a stimulant; and more than 2 million yuan (HK$2.5 million) in cash, the report said.

They also seized a pistol and five vehicles. Another 14 people were arrested in Guangdong and Shandong, bringing the total arrests to 30.

The case is part of a special investigation against drug crime carried out jointly by Shanghai, Jiangsu and Guangdong authorities appointed by the Ministry of Public Security in cooperation with Taiwan, the Legal Daily reported.

The 30 people arrested – including a Jiangsu ringleader surnamed Nie – were linked to a group that came to police attention as early as June.

During a meeting in Huaian, Jiangsu, on June 24, the local police reported that they obtained important information about a group that produces and deals drugs, selling the goods to a Taiwan dealer in Guangdong, the Daily said.

Nie was tagged one of the principal members of the gang by Huaian police.

Investigators found that the suspects purchased raw materials from Shandong province and manufactured ephedrine in Huaian, before transporting them to Guangdong, where the drugs would be sold.

A team has been set up to fully investigate the case.
