Li Shijun, a 27-year-old biologist with a freshly-minted doctoral degree, has become one of China's youngest deputy mayors.

The city government of Longhai, a small coastal city in China's southeastern province of Fujian, named Li as one of its deputy mayors on its official website on Monday.

The website said Li was born in 1987, and graduated from Tsinghua University this year with a doctoral degree in biology. He will be the deputy mayor in charge of Longhai city’s technology development on a contract basis for two years.

Li was said to be recruited through Fujian government’s young talent scheme, which hires top graduates from China's three most prestigious universities, Tsinghua University, Peking University and Renmin University, all based in Beijing.

Li is not the only one who rocketed to career success at a young age.
