Beijing will remain shrouded in smog until tomorrow, forecasters have warned.

Pollution returned to the capital yesterday, with the official air quality index reaching 212 at 6pm, a level deemed by the authorities to be "heavily polluted".

The United States embassy reading was even higher, at 220, slightly below the "very unhealthy" level in its index.

It is the third time the capital has been hit by choking air pollution this month.

The index readings have twice soared past the 400 mark in October.

Any measurement above 300 is considered "hazardous", meaning people should avoid all outdoor exercise.
