Violent website closed
Two suspects have been arrested for running a website featuring explicitly violent content, Xinhuanet.com  reports. Beijing police said the two men, from Shandong  and Shanghai, showed videos and photos of beheadings, corpses and animal abuse on their website, which had more than 10,000 “VIP” members. Police vowed to crack down on such illegal sites.
Averting subway mayhem
Transport authorities will deploy 3,600 extra staff at subway stations to deal with possible problems on December 28 when a new ticketing system is launched, The Beijing News  reports. There have been mounting complaints from commuters after the city announced last month that it would replace flat-priced single-journey tickets with fares based on distance.
CHONGQING
Drunken generosity
Police are looking for a young man who was so drunk on Sunday afternoon that he stuffed 2,000 yuan (HK$2,530) into an elderly woman’s handbag at a bus station, the Chongqing Evening News  reports. The woman, 72, told police that the young stranger called himself her “grandson” and insisted she accept the money. Before she realised what happened, he disappeared. She turned the money over to police.
Steaming over delivery
The owner of a steamed bun restaurant was incensed when he took delivery of two 9kg cases of ginger from a wholesale market, only to find that each box, supposedly only cardboard, weighed 1.8kg, the Chongqing Evening News reports. He found pieces of concrete stuffed between the lining of the boxes. The vendor said these were to stiffen the boxes for their long-distance transport, and paid him 10 yuan in compensation.
GUANGDONG
A taste of Australia
A Guangzhou travel agency is promoting kangaroo meat as an attraction on its package tour to Australia, Guangzhou Daily reports.  The tour costs 31,999 yuan and attracted many inquiries, including people who wondered if was possible to visit Australia and eat one of its national symbols. An official from the state of Queensland confirmed that it was legal to eat kangaroo in Australia, as long as it came from authorised providers.  
Officer, but no gentleman
A 50-year-old man has been arrested in Huizhou for impersonating a senior police officer to impress women and borrow money from them, the China News Service reports. The man, named Xie, met a woman named Zhu and afterwards asked her for money to develop a property project with one of his connections. He did so again, 21 times, asking Zhu for 250,000 yuan in total, before he vanished. Zhu called police, who told her that Xie had used the same trick on another woman.

Father demands death
A heartbroken father asked to be given a death sentence during his trial in Nanjing yesterday for killing his daughter, the Yangtse Evening News  reports. The single father, who was sentence to life instead, told prosecutors he had quit his full-time job to look after the girl. But, when he learnt that the 13-year-old had skipped school for a week, he got drunk and beat her with a steel pipe. The badly injured girl was sent to hospital but died the next day. 
Drivers fail the grade
Nearly half the drivers in the province could be “highly dangerous” according to the results of an online test of traffic habits, Yangtse.com  reports. When 45,000 drivers took the short online test, 45 per cent scored under 70 per cent, a “highly dangerous” score.
SHANDONG
Beaten by nature
Police caught a robbery suspect because he could not bear hiding out in a freezing lake for nearly an hour,  Iqilu.com reports. The 30-year-old man allegedly beat and robbed a young woman at knifepoint near the lake and ran off before police arrived. Police searched the area five times before he turned himself in.
New laws for residents
Residents living in or near demolition sites will receive greater protection from having their water and power illegally disconnected, under new regulations starting in March, Xinhuanet.com reports.  Violators will face fines and even criminal charges. Forced demolitions are often the cause of popular unrest and are considered one of the biggest threats to social stability.
SHANGHAI
Poisoning verdict appeal
A former medical student convicted of a fatal poisoning said in his appeal hearing that he did not intend to kill his roommate and should not be charged with homicide, the Xinmin Evening News reports. Lin Senhao,   a 28-year-old graduate student at Fudan University,  laced a water dispenser with a toxic chemical over a grudge. His roommate died 15 days after the incident on April 1 last year and Lin was sentenced to death this February.  Lin wrote an apology to his roommate’s parents, seeking forgiveness.
New games central
A professional computer gaming team has opened a training centre in Songjiang  district and is looking for recruits, Sina.com reports. Team WE  was founded in 2005 and is one of the country’s oldest “e-sports” organisations. The five-storey training centre has dorms, dining rooms, offices and training rooms with ergonomic chairs. It also has chefs, house cleaners and an indoor basketball court.
ZHEJIANG
Phone worth a fortune
Police at Wenzhou airport helped a businessman find his lost 680,000 yuan mobile phone that he lost on Saturday, the Qianjiang Evening News reports. Surveillance video showed a middle-aged woman finding the phone in the terminal before she took it home. The woman, who lives near the airport, was stunned when police told her the value of the phone, which was encrusted with 800 diamonds. 
Rare deer killed
A villager from Linan faces up to five years in jail for trapping and killing a protected South China spotted deer, the Qianjiang Evening News reports. Police found the hide of the animal, a critically endangered species, in the man’s pig sty. The man said he set a trap on Qingliang Mountain a month ago. The species, also called the South China Sika deer, is found only in the area, and fewer than 300 remain in the wild.
XINJIANG
Young embezzlers jailed
A young couple in Urumqi have been jailed for embezzling 4.1 million yuan in public funds, Legal Daily reports. The couple said they invested the funds in the stock market and a private trading business in the hope of buying a flat. The woman turned herself in to police in June after her logistics company started to review the books, and the man was arrested in July. The man was jailed for five years and the woman, 3 1/2 years.
Stop to train services
Four train services between Urumqi and Hami  will be temporarily suspended between December 20 and 25, Iyaxin.com reports. The suspension will allow authorities to concentrate on the operation of the Urumqi to Lanzhou  high-speed rail link on December 10.
