Hong Kong comedian Eric Tsang Chi-wai has resigned as a Jiangmen political consultative conference delegate after being criticised for failing to attend any meetings since his 2011 appointment.

A mainland newspaper editorial yesterday had urged him to step down after he failed to attend the annual meeting of Jiangmen city delegates in Guangdong, for a fourth year in a row.

The online news portal of People’s Daily reported today that Tsang had resigned.

“I am very sorry,” Tsang was quoted as saying by Hong Kong media.

“As a delegate on both the Guangzhou and Jiangmen political consultative conferences, I could attend only the one in Guangzhou because the dates of the two annual assemblies clashed.

“I have already telephoned Jiangmen Political Consultative Conference to announce my resignation.”

Tsang’s public relations representative was also quoted by People’s Daily saying that the comedian had made the Guangzhou conference his priority because he had often received the invitation to its annual meetings earlier than for the conference in Jiangmen.
