A Chinese man who opened the emergency exit of an aircraft at an airport on Monday will have to spend next week’s Lunar New Year holiday in prison, The Beijing News reports.

Police, who detained the man at Nanjing Lukou International Airport, said they would keep him in jail for 10 days as a punishment.

The man had expressed no regret for his behaviour, said China Southern Airlines, operator of the flight that was due to travel from Nanjing, in Jiangsu province, to Nanning, in Guangxi province.

The man, who has not been identified, boarded the Boeing 737-800 aircraft on Monday and immediately walked over to the emergency exit and opened it as other passengers were boarding from the departure gate.

He gave no explanation for his actions and simply sat down by the open door and gazed outside.
