Apple's iPhone 6 may be a must-have accessory for many people on the mainland, but not, apparently, at one Buddhist temple.

A man was photographed at the Mount Xiqiao temple in Foshan in Guangdong on Sunday putting his new smartphone in the donation box, the news website Youth.cn reports.

A basic iPhone model costs about 5,300 yuan (HK$6,700).

The donor was among worshippers making prayers and giving offerings to ensure wealth and happiness at the start of the Lunar New Year. Staff at the temple later fished it out and handed it back to him, the photographer who took the picture said.

Monks did not use iPhones and only cash was accepted as a donation, he was told.

Charities helping people in need also had more use for money rather than smartphones, staff said.
