Twenty members of a Chinese opera troupe were killed when their bus plunged down a cliff in northern China.

The bus was driving along a mountain road at about 11pm on Monday night in Henan province when the accident happened, Xinhua reported.

Thirteen people were injured.

The bus appeared to have missed a turning as it was travelling at speed and the vehicle was badly damaged as it rolled down a steep incline, the report said.

High winds and cold temperatures at the crash site in Linzhou hampered rescue efforts, the Dahe Daily newspaper reported.

More than 150 soldiers, firefighters, police officers and more 200 volunteers living near the scene helped recover the injured.
