Hong Kong film director threatens to sue chief executive's daughter if she doesn't show up for work

The drama over the acting debut of Leung Chai-yan, the controversial daughter of Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying, intensified yesterday when the film director said he was "fed up" with her failure to show up for work, and threatened to sue her.

Director Wynn Lau Chun-fai claimed the crew had lost contact with Leung for almost two weeks. Filming had been due to begin on Sunday.

The "schedule has been made messy because of Chai-yan," Lau said. "We are fed up with her. If she fails to show up or give a concrete reply soon, we may have to consider legal action."

Asked about news reports that Leung might quit the film and her parents compensate the production company, Lau said he had not heard about her intention. Nor had he been approached about compensation.

There was no comment from the Chief Executive's Office as of yesterday evening.

Lau denied he had underestimated the political implications of signing up Leung. "I won't regret having signed her up. And I won't regret losing her either. We will find another actress to replace her if needed. Perhaps the production would be smoother without her," Lau said.

In a recent interview with the Chinese-language , Leung said her parents had no problem with her acting but they had mixed opinions about Lau, who had produced or directed adult films. He worked on the erotic film and its sequel, as well as several thrillers.

"Does making Category III movies make me a cheap director?" Lau asked. Hong Kong's film classification system rates adult-only movies as Category III. "Ang Lee has also directed Category III films. Is Ang Lee cheap?" Lau added, referring to Lee's award-winning .

Lau's film, with the working title , created a buzz last month when news broke that Leung had signed a contract to star in it, earning six figures for her debut.
