Zhu Mingguo guilty of accepting more than 140 million yuan in payoffs
A former political advisory chief in Guangdong province has received a suspended death sentence after being convicted of taking bribes of more than 140 million yuan (HK$160 million), state media reports.
The Liuzhou Intermediate People’s Court in southwestern Guangxi sentenced Zhu Mingguo, the former chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference in Guangdong province, on Friday for holding assets worth 91 million yuan from unidentified sources, and accepting 141 million yuan in assets and bribes, either directly or through his wife, Xinhua News Agency reported.
The death sentence is suspended for two years, after which such sentences are usually commuted to life in prison.
The report said Zhu, 59, was found guilty of exploiting his position and taking bribes in return for helping others on projects, land bids and promotions, when he was the top law enforcer in the municipality of Chongqing, the head of the anti-corruption body in Guangdong and the top political advisory official in Guangdong between 2002 and 2014.
All the assets in Zhu’s name from unknown sources have been confiscated, the report said.
