- Taiwan's ruling Kuomintang party chief Eric Chu plans to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on May 4, reports the Central News Agency.
- After scolding mid-ranking bureaucrats for dragging their feet on reforms, Chinese premier Li Keqiang has ordered all State Council-approved measures to be issued in seven days. Keqiang had criticised the slow roll-out of his economic policies as the government prioritises reforms to help revive the economy.
- Vice-Premier Zhang Gaoli has been appointed to lead reforms in the State Council to scale back government roles and streamline administration. This comes after Zhang said last month that freeing up market forces on the mainland would result in a reduced role for government.
- In a key reshuffle, national statistics chief Ma Jiantang has been appointed as deputy chief of the China National School of Administration, the government's top public administration academy. Vice-finance minister Wang Baoan is tipped by the media to replace Ma as the next National Bureau of Statistics head.
Diplomacy:
- President Xi Jinping is expected to meet Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on the sidelines of Asian-African Conference in Indonesia.
- China is set to kick off its first naval-air joint patrol in waters off the disputed Paracel Islands near Vietnam.
