A senior official from the southern city of Nanning is under investigation for alleged corruption.
Yu Yuanhui, the city's Communist Party secretary, has been accused of severe violations of discipline, a form of words the authorities often use to describe alleged corruption.
A statement from the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, the government's anti-graft agency, gave no details of the allegations made against the official.
Yu was a rising political star in the Central Committee, the core leadership of the Communist Party, according to the Beijing Youth Daily.
The report also highlighted Yu's background in a powerful faction of the party with links to the Communist Youth League, the tuanpai.
This was the power base of former president Hu Jintao. Yu, 51, was detained by the anti-corruption agency on Friday, the anti-graft agency statement said.
He was also member of the powerful standing committee controlling the Guangxi region .
Yu was reported to be carrying out official duties the day before he was detained, according to the city government website, meeting a manager at state-run China Post and attending the opening of municipal games in Nanning the same day.
The city government in Nanning and its anti-graft watchdog department could not be reached for comment yesterday.
The allegations made against Yu come amid the government's sweeping anti-corruption crackdown launched by President Xi Jinping .
Hundreds of officials have been detained in recent months, including the former national security chief Zhou Yongkang .
He was charged in April with corruption, abuse of power and intentionally leaking state secrets.
Eleven alternate members of the Communist Party Central Committee, including Yu, have come under investigation for alleged corruption since President Xi took power in 2012, according to the Beijing Youth Daily.
Separately, the anti-graft watchdog in Guangdong province had revealed that 7,649 cadres at village-level had been investigated for alleged corruption since last year, the Guangzhou Daily reported.
Many were accused of embezzling state assets, the report said.
