A timeline of what is planned during President Xi Jinping’s visit to the UK

With red carpets at the ready, a royal reception awaits President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan for the Chinese leader’s first state visit to Britain on Monday.

Monday

Xi and Peng will be greeted by Viscount Hood, Lord-in-Waiting, at the airport.

Tuesday

Charles, Prince of Wales, and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, will greet the pair at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, before travelling to Horse Guards Parade for an official ceremonial welcome.

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, will greet the pair at the Royal Pavilion.

•Xi and Prince Philip will inspect the Guard of Honour, who will give a royal salute. The Chinese national anthem will be played and presentations made.

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip will accompany Xi and Peng in a state carriage procession along The Mall to Buckingham Palace where the president and his first lady will lunch with the Queen.

The pair will enjoy a private tour of an exhibition with items from the Royal Collection in the Picture Gallery.

Xi will address parliament at the Palace of Westminster, where they will be greeted by the speaker of the House of Commons and the Lord Speaker.

In the afternoon, Xi and Peng will have tea with Prince Charles and Camilla at Clarence House after seeing a showcase by the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts.

Xi will receive an official call at Buckingham Palace by the Duke of Cambridge, and another by Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the opposition Labour Party.

In the evening, Xi and Peng will attend a traditional State Banquet at Buckingham Palace, where Xi and Queen Elizabeth will make short speeches.

Wednesday

Xi will visit Imperial College London with Britain’s Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne and Prince Andrew, Duke of York.

They will travel to Lancaster House to attend a creative industry event with Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, and his wife Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. The event celebrates cultural collaboration between the two nations.

Xi will be greeted by Prime Minister David Cameron at No 10 Downing Street before they attend the UK-China Business Summit at Mansion House focusing on investment, infrastructure and innovation.

They will visit Huawei Technologies, the world’s biggest telecommunications equipment maker.

Xi and Peng will dine at a banquet hosted by the Lord Mayor and the City of London Corporation at the Guildhall, where Xi and the Lord Mayor will give speeches

Thursday

The pair will receive a formal farewell from Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip at Buckingham Palace.

With Prince Andrew, Duke of York, Xi will visit satellite-provider Inmarsat, attending a Confucius Institute conference held by the UCL Institute of Education.

Xi and Peng will join Cameron and his wife at Chequers, the prime minister's private retreat, for dinner before flying to Manchester.

Friday

Xi and Osborne will visit the National Graphene Institute, the world’s leading research centre for graphene – an extremely thin sheet of carbon with extraordinary properties – at the University of Manchester.

The Chinese president and Cameron will then meet at Manchester City Football Club. They will have lunch at Manchester Town Hall, hosted by the mayor and attended by civic and business representatives.

Xi and Cameron will attend an event at Manchester Airport.

The Lord Chamberlain will bid farewell to Xi and Peng before their departure.
