All Hangzhou markets must stay open during G20 summit: government
Residents of Hangzhou have been assured they can still buy daily necessities during the two-day gathering of the world’s leaders at the G20 summit next month as the local government has instructed supermarkets to stay open.
All medium and large supermarkets, agricultural product markets and wholesale food markets “must stay in business” during the G20 summit, according to a regulation issued by the city government on Tuesday.
If necessary, such markets should extend their business hours to cover consumers’ shopping demands, the regulation added.
Hangzhou has been massively upgrading the city’s infrastructure with such improvements as repaving roads and building new subways for the G20 summit over the last couple of years.
Security measures across the city have also been strengthened significantly in recent months, both moves which have caused inconvenience to residents.
The government said it would make scientific predictions to ensure adequate supplies of perishable goods such as meat, fish and fresh vegetables.
Small restaurants and grocery stores were also “encouraged” to stay in business to minimise disruptions caused by the political event to residents’ daily lives.
The city’s water, power and natural gas supplies would also be closely monitored to ensure quick repairs or backup should any problems occur, according to the regulation.
Rubbish collection companies must collect and remove trash from the city promptly, and traffic police would issue special permits to their vehicles to allow them to enter and leave the city without difficulty.
