Warning after French national attacked in downtown Shanghai
French embassy in Beijing advises its nationals to increase their vigilance

The French embassy in Beijing called for its citizens in China to be vigilant after a French national was assaulted by a local resident in Shanghai this week.
The embassy said in a statement on Friday that the attack took place on Wednesday lunchtime on Yongjia Road in Xuhui district, a former French concession. A previous statement by the embassy said a male individual attacked the victim with a knife and fled the scene after the victim’s Chinese colleague intervened.
The suspect was captured by police shortly afterwards, the embassy said.
“Given the situation, the French embassy in China calls on members of the French community to exercise the utmost vigilance,” the embassy said.
Shanghai police said in a statement that the suspect attacked the victim with a razor and was mentally disabled. It said the suspect’s motivation was unclear.
