Police in Shanghai have broken up a gang selling fake condoms in eight provinces and big cities around China, according to a news website report.

Three million condoms were seized, which police said were of poor quality and dangerous to health as they contained heavy metals, People.com.cn reported.

The fakes were labelled as well-known brands such as Durex, the report said, and were mainly sold at small hotels.

“At a workshop in Henan province, we found a small production line which produced bad-quality condoms. The lubricating oil made us vomit,” Zhang Wenliang, from Shanghai’s Yangpu district Public Security Bureau was quoted as saying.

“We sent the seized condoms to the quality authorities and tests showed they contained heavy metals. They are very dangerous to humans.”

Nine suspects were detained, including a woman who hired workers to pack the condoms before selling them via her online shop.
