Beijing has become the latest major city in China to allow guide dogs into subways, according to a newspaper report.

Under a new regulation that takes effect next month, the blind or visually impaired must produce a certificate before they can bring in the dogs, which must be muzzled, according to The Beijing News.

Staff should offer help when needed, the regulation said.

Other passengers are advised not to touch or play with the guide dogs, according to subway operators.

For safety reasons, the operators can encourage visually impaired passengers to avoid travelling during the peak hours of 7am to 10am, and 4.30pm to 7.30pm.

Chengdu, in Sichuan province, Nanjing in Jiangsu province and Shanghai have already taken a similar step, although most cities in China still bar people from taking guide dogs on public transport.
