Chinese tourists silence scenic attraction’s festival after stealing hundreds of wind chimes
Month-long event cancelled after only six days when visitors to Xiandu countryside area walk off with almost all of the 1,000 wind chimes hanging from tree branches
A scenic attraction in China was forced to cancel its wind chime festival after tourists stole hundreds of the devices hanging from trees that formed part of the display, local newspaper the Qianjiang Evening News reports.
The Xiandu attraction – which features 160 square km of beautiful countryside, including a large lake surrounded by tree-covered mountains – near Lishui, in Zhejiang province planned to entice tourists by holding a month-long wind chime festival throughout May.
However, after only six days, tourists had walked off with almost all of the 1,000 wind chimes hanging from tree branches around the site, so the festival had to be cancelled.
Some tourists climbed up into the trees to reach the wind chimes, while others used long sticks to unhook them from branches, the newspaper said.
So few wind chimes were left in the scenic spot after the three-day Labour Day holiday that tourists visiting the area this week complained that the advertisement promoting the wind chime festival was misleading.
