Corrupt Xinjiang official jailed for 15 years

Commander at quasi-military production corps took bribes of cash and expensive drink

An official in the Xinjiang region of northwest China has been jailed for 15 years for corruption, according to a newspaper report.

He Lixin took 700,000 yuan (HK$887,000) in bribes as well as gifts of expensive liquor from the owner of an oil processing mill, the Legal Daily said.

He was an assistant regiment commander in the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps and used his influence to help the mill owner get a loan of 27 million yuan from a bank.

The cash was supposed to be transferred to the corps bank account, but the mill owner kept it to pay off his other debts, the report said.

The production and construction corps was set up by the central government in the 1950s to farm, settle and help develop the economy of Xinjiang.

The corps took legal action against the mill owner last year.

The official tried to cover up some of the bribes by pretending that he had won three boxes of cash and liquor in drinks brand promotional campaigns, the report said.

Two of the boxes contained 100,000 yuan and the other 200,000 yuan, according to the article.
