Tens of thousands of people attended the annual “beggars’ rally” on Sunday in the lakeside city of Dali, in China’s Yunan province.

It is a local tradition for people to worship the gods and give handouts to beggars in return for blessings during the day, which is believed to be the birthday of the Buddhist King of the Inferno, the news portal zhongguodali.com reported.

People also burn paper money and set off firecrackers as part of the ceremony. Some even make offerings of fruit, liquor and even cook rice and chicken to the deceased people.

The event attract beggars from around the region.
