A corrupt official in eastern China who took nearly 2 million yuan (HK$2.5 million) in bribes was so stingy he would rather take a two-hour bumpy bus ride to buy food than drive his own car, according to a newspaper report.
Zhu Dongsheng, a former city government department head in Zhenjiang in eastern Jiangsu province, has been jailed for 11 years for taking bribes, the Yangtze Evening News reported.
He abused his power during his 10-year tenure at the civil defence department to help developers win government construction projects in exchange for cash, gift cards and cigarettes, the report said.
Zhu lived frugally, unlike other corrupt officials who enjoy a lavish lifestyle, according to the newspaper.
His favourite food was cheap tofu made in a neighbouring town 30 km away.
As a regular patron, he insisted on travelling there by bus because it was cheaper than driving his own car, the report said.
