Chinese university student 'forged banknotes with pile of A4 paper, printer'

A university student from eastern China has gone on trial for allegedly forging banknotes with a file of A4 paper and a printer, according to a newspaper report.

The 20-year-old student who studies in Hangzhou in Zhejiang province could face between three and 10 years in jail if convicted, the Beijing Morning News said.

Prosecutors said the student had produced 262 fake 20 yuan (HK$24) banknotes with a printer and a pile of A4 paper with silver lines through it that he bought online in January, the report said.

He also downloaded a set of renminbi banknote templates from a website.

The student, whose full name was not given in the report, attempted to pay for a delivered package with a fake banknote he had printed, but the counterfeit was spotted by the mail man.
