‘Exasperated’ Chinese mum chains son, 13, to street pole for misbehaving

A mother in southwestern China has chained her 13-year-old son to a pole, in public, for misbehaving, local media reported.

The boy was found on Monday evening cuffed to a 1m chain with two locks to an electricity pole in Kunming, Yunnan province.

The boy appeared calm but kept his head down, Yunnan.cn reports, but passersby wondered what could have driven his mother to such an act.

The boy’s 44-year-old mother came from neighbouring Guizhou province to Kunming 16 years ago and works as hawker.

“I have 10 children, the oldest is 23 and the youngest only two,” she told a reporter.

The boy is her sixth child, but the mother said he regularly misbehaved and often skipped school for days without returning home.

He once went missing for nearly two months after his mother dropped him off at school.

His parents even tried locking him in the house, but he climbed out through the window, so they said they had no choice but to chain him to the pole to stop him running away while they tended their street store.
