Wow Zedong! Farmers, villagers join forces to build 36-metre statue of communist leader in northern China

Farmers and local entrepreneurs have funded the construction of a huge statue of Mao Zedong in northern China.

The statue of the communist leader has been built on a plot of vacant land in Tongxu county near Kaifeng in Henan province, the news website Hnr.cn reported.

It cost 3 million yuan (HK$3.5 million) to build and is 36 metres high, the article said.

It is made of concrete and steel and is covered in gold paint.

Villagers said many tourists had come to have their photographs taken with the landmark.
