Chinese man accused of killing hundreds of dogs with a crossbow

A man from eastern China has been arrested for allegedly killing hundreds of dogs with a crossbow and poison darts, according to a news website report.

The man and an accomplice killed the animals “for profit” in the Danyang area of Jiangsu province, Chinanews.com reported, without giving details of who bought the carcasses.

Similar cases have been reported in China where dead dogs were sold to restaurants for meat.

Police believe the pair killed hundreds of dogs in the area over a two-month period, the report said.

“It came as a shock after we confiscated one crossbow and a dozen anaesthetic needles at the scene,” one unnamed police officer was quoted as saying when recalling how the man was captured.

The authorities were first alerted after a villager living in Danyang called the police after two of his pet dogs were poisoned and the corpses taken by two people who fled the scene.
