A 21-year-old Chinese pharmacy student survived falling from her sixth-floor dormitory window – only to die later from her injuries after failing to summon help, mainland media reports.

Liu Yang, who was in her third year of studies at Heilongjiang University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, in Harbin, managed to stand up after the fall and was filmed by surveillance cameras knocking at the entrance gate and windows on the ground floor of the dormitory for 30 minutes before collapsing at 4am on April 23, the West China Metropolis reported on Thursday.

She managed to survive the initial fall because she had landed on some washing lines on the ground floor, the report said.
During the night the temperatures fell as low as 0 degrees Celsius, the report said.
The doorbell to the entrance to the dormitory was later revealed to be broken, and no one in the building had heard her cries for help.
Liu was eventually discovered by students lying unconscious at 6am. Paramedics battled to revive her as she was rushed to hospital, where she died 30 minutes later, the report said.
Officials said Liu, a native of the city of Lishui, in southeast Zhejiang province, had fallen from a larger open window, which had only a 0.6 metre-high glass panel serving as a barrier above floor level.

China’s construction regulations stipulate that all walls or barriers of residential flats on or above the sixth floor must be not less than one metre in height.
A police investigation into her death is underway, but police said there was no evidence to suggest that she had intended to commit suicide.
It was not known why she was on the balcony at the time she fell, but her death was not believed to be suspicious, police said.
Liu’s death has sparked heated online discussion.
The most shared comment said that the university and the building management were both responsible for the tragedy because Liu’s life could have been saved if there had been someone on duty at the dormitory during the night.
