Video | ‘Crippled’ beggar in China exposed as fraud after his trousers are pulled off

A “crippled” beggar in northwest China has been exposed as a fraud in an online video that has quickly gone viral.

The video shows the beggar wheeling himself around in a trolley, asking for hand-outs on a street in the city of Altay, Xinjiang, according to a report posted on People’s Daily’s WeChat account on Sunday.

The man’s legs appeared to have been amputated.

But a passer-by, convinced that the beggar was faking his disability, pulled off the latter’s trousers to expose his legs tucked into his underwear.

The beggar, exposed, fled on his trolley as the angry passer-by chased after him, yelling that he was a fraud.

“Professional begging” has evolved into a social phenomenon in China in recent years.

Previous media reports have revealed that such beggars can earn more than 10,000 yuan (HK$11,700) a month simply by faking a disability.
