Flooding in the Yangtze River basin has left at least 112 people dead or missing in recent days, and the situation could worsen when a typhoon makes landfall this week, mainland media reported on Tuesday.

About 16 million people have been affected by the rains that submerged vast tracts along the Yangtze, China’s longest river, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.

Nationwide, the death toll stands at 170, and direct economic losses exceeded 20 billion yuan (HK$23.3 billion), the ministry said.

Premier Li Keqiang travelled to Fuyang in Anhui province, where he met residents and encouraged officials to do all they could to protect people and livelihoods. Li was accompanied by Vice-Premier Wang Yang and State Councillor Yang Jing, according to Xinhua.

In Anhui’s Zongyang county, residents awoke on Monday with floodwaters partially submerging their homes, but less than two hours later, a dyke broke and little more than the roofs of their homes could be seen.
