Strong rainfalls continue in China: Shanghai on alert as flooding inundates central provinces

Heavy rain has continued across eastern and central China, with Xinxiang (新鄉) in Henan (河南) province becoming the latest city to suffer floods, in this case causing delays on one of the country’s main railway lines.

Rain started on Friday night in Xinxiang, which lies on the Yellow River, with 370mm falling by 8 am yesterday morning. It was the city’s heaviest rainfall since 1949.

More than 32,300 armed police were fighting floods across the nation that have killed more than 160 people, Xinhua reported. The armed police had rescued and evacuated 4,500 people, it added.

The rain triggered floods in more 60 counties in central provinces. Power was cut off in many cities. Tourism sites were closed due to dangerous torrents and landslides.

Train services on the Beijing-Guangzhou railway were suspended or delayed. High speed trains were running a much slower speeds.
