Chinese workmates rescue colleague from suicide attempt in river ... then four die after she threw herself back into the water

Passer-by also killed attempting to save victims in Dunhuang in Gansu province

Four people were drowned after they twice tried to rescue a work colleague trying to kill herself in a river in northwest China, a news website reported.

The woman succeeded in taking her own life. A passer-by who came to the aid of the people in the water was also drowned.

The 19-year-old woman was drinking with a group of work colleagues early on Sunday morning and threw herself into a river in Dunhuang in Gansu province after saying she no longer wanted to live, Ifeng.com reported.

Her colleagues managed to rescue the woman, who was not named, but she jumped into the waters again.

Four of the five workmaters were drowned as they came to her aid once more.

The fifth colleague called for help from the shore.

A waiter jumped into the water to try to save the victims and was also drowned, the report said.

A special team has been set up by the city government to investigate the incident.
