A Chinese fugitive who has been on the run for 14 years has given himself up to the police after he became emotional and regretful watching a TV drama, a news website reported.

The man stole 20,000 yuan (HK$23,000) from a hotel in Taizhou in Jiangsu province where he worked as a security guard in 2002, Sina.com.cn reported.

He then fled to Guangdong province, leaving his newlywed wife behind.

He constantly changed his job and never contacted his family over the years, the report said.

The man would watch programmes on Taizhou TV in his home dialect when he missed his family, but was still reluctant to turn himself in to the police.
