A love-struck Dutchman had to be hospitalised in central China after he spent 10 days at an airport heartbroken because he failed to meet up with a woman he met online, mainland media report.

The 41-year-old man said he flew to Changsha Huanghua International Airport in Hunan province after arranging to meet her, Hunan TV reported.

He refused to leave the airport when she did not show up and was hospitalised last week for physical exhaustion, the report said.

A day after the report aired, the woman contacted the TV station, saying she met the man two months ago. They got on well online and decided to meet in a year or so when the relationship settled, the woman said.

She said the man sent her a photo but she did not understand what it was.

“It looked like flight information but he never contacted me after that and I was also waiting online,” she said.

She said she was not able to meet him because she was having cosmetic surgery in Zhengzhou, Henan province, and needed time to recover, the report said.

She said she would try to get in touch with the man to explain everything.
