Chinese father-to-be who vowed ‘to die with aborted baby’ critically ill after suicide attempt

A Chinese man is critically ill and “could die at any time” after trying to commit suicide upon hearing that his pregnant girlfriend wanted an abortion, mainland media reports.

He had vowed to “die to be with the baby”, the local newspaper Qilu Evening News reported.

The man, aged “30 to 40”, swallowed the poison dichlorvos, widely used as an insecticide for controlling household pests, in the hallway of a hotel in Jinan, Shandong province, on Monday.

The man’s girlfriend, who has been waiting anxiously outside the intensive care room where he is being treated, said he had earlier sent her numerous messages pleading with her not to go ahead with the abortion.

She said he had told her his life would have no meaning if the baby died. “He said he would die to be with the baby”, the girlfriend said.

The woman has not gone ahead with the abortion up to now.

Having an abortion is legal in China, which has led to many abortion clinics emerging across the country.

An increasing number of teenagers have received abortions, which has been partly blamed on a lack of adequate sex education in mainland schools.
