A Chinese tourist was taken to hospital and has been fined several hundred baht after she allegedly tried to harm herself with a knife while calling for political liberty, at an international airport in Thailand, Thai and Chinese media report.

The woman, whose name and age was not given, claimed she would injure herself with a paring knife she had in her hand on Monday morning at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok, the Universal Daily News reported.

The woman shouted that she sought political freedom, the report said.

Police were called to the scene and confronted the woman for about an hour before they managed to subdue her.

The woman was then taken to hospital for a medical check, the Beijing Times reported, quoting staff of the Chinese embassy in Thailand.

The woman was reportedly wandering around the airport building for almost a day before the incident, and police had not determined any reasons for her behaviour as the woman was emotional and there were language difficulties.

The woman was fined 500 baht (HK$109) for carrying a knife into the airport secretly, the Chinese embassy staff said on Wednesday.
