Chinese college student sets trap with fake iPhone to catch a thief

A student in eastern China helped catch the man who stole her iPhone by enticing him with a fake phone at a campus concert, according to mainland police.

The female student, nicknamed Xiao Wan, identified the thief when he tried to take the fake iPhone, which she had tied to her finger with a string, the Anhui police said on their official Weibo page.

Xiao Wan shouted, “Stop the thief!” as soon as she felt the string being pulled.

At an earlier concert at her university in Wuhu, Anhui province, Xiao Wan lost her iPhone 6s Plus after she put it on the floor beside her, according to the Weibo post published on October 13.

While she was searching for it, she came across another four to five students who had lost their phones the same way.

Believing the thief would be at another concert the next day, Xiao Wan decided to use a fake phone as bait, the post said.

After the thief was identified, about 10 of her male classmates apprehended him and called the police.

The thief, a man in his 40s from Guangxi province, confessed that he had stolen several phones at the school, including Xiao Wan’s, the police said.
