Teacher from elite Chinese school sentenced to 16 year’s jail for indecent assault on pupils
A male teacher at an elite middle school in Dalian has been sentenced to 16 years on charges of indecent assault and acting indecently against children.
Li Chao Yuan, a veteran teacher at Rui Ge Middle School, which is considered one of the best schools in the city, had allegedly been sexually assaulting and beating 16 of the pupils in his class for more than two years, Thepaper.cn reported.
The incident first gained attention when a pupil in Li’s class told his parents Li had done “something extremely gross” to him in January after Li took the pupil to his home, the report said.
Li also kissed and touched the boy in front of the class, the boy was quoted as saying.
Only two pupils in Li’s class had not been assaulted, with the remaining 16 all suffering some degree of sexual or physical assault, the report said.
The assaults caused several pupils to suffer symptoms such as depression, anxiety and paranoia, some parents were quoted as saying.
Li filed an appeal with the court after the verdict came out in August according to the report, with the parents of the victimised students planning to file further lawsuits against the school and Li, asking for compensation.
Reports of sexual assaults on children by teachers have emerged repeatedly even in developed cities in recent years.
The cases have shed a rare light on the sorry state of China’s education system, which prioritises results and neglects the psychological and physical health of pupils. Despite online media in China being filled with sexual material, the subject of sex has remained largely taboo in classrooms and homes.
