A Chinese landlord and his wife were allegedly stabbed to death by a tenant who tried to blackmail them and stole their jewellery worth 10,000 yuan (HK$11,000), mainland media reports.

Police arrested a suspect soon after the bodies of the unnamed victims were discovered at their home in Huidong county, in Guangdong province, on Wednesday, the Southern Metropolis News reported.

The couple had reportedly been stabbed several times, neighbours who discovered their bodies were quoted as saying in the report.

The landlord’s elder sisters claimed the tenant had stolen gold jewellery worth 10,000 yuan from the couple only the month before and also tried to blackmail them into handing over 50,000 yuan after taking personal items including the landlord’s ID card and social security, the report said.

The tenant, 32, was arrested in Qingyuan on the same day that the couple’s bodies were found and had allegedly confessed to the killings. But no further details were revealed by the authorities.

The couple, who lived on the first floor of their home, had rented a third-floor room to the suspect, who was unemployed and had lived there with his wife, the report said.

The tenant’s rental agreement had been due to finish at the end of November.

The sisters of the landlord claimed the tenant had used text messages to try to blackmail their brother into handing over 50,000 yuan to before stealing several items of jewellery from the couple.

The report did not say whether the couple had paid any money to the suspect.

A neighbour said the landlord had told him about being blackmailed several months earlier and that he had later discovered his identity card and social security card were both missing. But the landlord had not told him anything further, the neighbour said.

Police are now investigating.
