Over 100 firemen, 50 fire engines and 12 hours ... what it took to put out massive blaze in Chinese migrant worker community
No one killed or injured, but migrant residents left distraught at loss of trading goods
A massive fire broke out in an area where many migrant workers live and store their trading goods in a city in eastern China on Sunday evening, a newspaper reported.
It took firefighters more than 12 hours to put out the blaze in Hangzhou in Zhejiang province, the City Express reported.
More than 50 fire engines were dispatched to the scene, an area around East Gate Mall, a major office building. No one was killed or injured in the fire, the local authorities said.
Residents living to the east, north and west of the fire were evacuated from their homes on Sunday evening. The area to the south of the fire is largely green belt.
Many migrant residents who are business people were distraught at the loss of their goods in the fire, including textile products, shoes and machinery.
The fire fighting authority said it took a long time to extinguish the blaze partly due to the narrow roads in the community which hindered fire engines’ access.
The report did not say how many buildings were destroyed in the blaze.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
