Chinese boy, 12, rescued after falling into 10-metre-deep well

Youngster pulled to safety in an hour after accident in Hunan province

A 12-year-old boy was pulled to safety by a team of rescuers an hour after he fell into a well in central China, mainland media reported.

The boy from Shimen county in Hunan province had been playing on a plank covering a 10-metre deep well when the accident happened on Saturday, the news website Thepaper.cn reported.

He was jumping on the plank when it gave way. The boy’s parents shouted for help immediately.

Firefighters were called and others in the area helped in the rescue effort, according to the article.

The boy was pulled from the well at about 7pm by firefighters and residents and was sent to hospital for checks.

He had no major injuries except for some minor bone fractures in the neck and back, the report said.

A six-year-old boy died in November in the village of Zhongmengchan near Baoding in Hebei province after he fell and became trapped down an abandoned well.

Workers tried for four days to rescue the child.
